View Full Version : Steel project boats
Off topic, I know. I'll put this into the bilge, if folks here would prefer.
But the other day, I was surfing E-Bay, and found an unfinished Thomas Colvin gazelle hull for sale. Can't locate the listing now, but the bid was very low. Still more than I can look at 'till my house renovation's done, but these things must come up regularly. The question is, where?
We've periodically seen links to project boat sites for wooden boats ... either unfinished, or in need of rehabbing. Are there similar sites scattered 'round the net for metal boats? I'm attracted to the idea of a Colvin pinky, but wouldn't know where to start to look for distress-sale projects listed somewhere on the web.

Try The Metal Boat Society. (http://www.metalboatsociety.com/)
Thanks MMD. Exactly what I was looking for ... didn't realize they had a forum over there too.

Sure looks like a very good deal and the seller is getting desperate to find it a home.
only 2 hours left.

only 2 hours left.Thats a shame as it's probly not even worth the 150 at the scrap yard, and with the duzzens of old rotted woodies around a restraunt is not even interested in it as a yard orniment.

Gary,
This hull is fair and true, and looks professionally built. Shes rusted over but looks good from the truck at 60 mph. If anybody is intrested I can stop and see what she looks like close up...
That's the listing I'd run across, alright. Wonder what the owner was willing to take?
The Gazelle is a design Colvin drew for his own use, and he sailed some thousands of miles in the original. A few have circumnavigated, and hundreds have been built.
I'm not wild about (a) the single chine, and (b) the junk rig, but there have been a bunch of other rigs Colvin designed for it at his clients' request. On his website, Colvin says that each rig has met with good success. It looks like this hull is a very good deal, shaving off thousands of $ and months (if not years) of work for someone wanting that design.
If I were not in the midst of a house renovation, strapped for cash ...

I know of a Roberts 35 in steel that is about 3/4 finished and for sale...theyre asking $5K or so but I'd bet they would be very negotiable...shes located in south Texas.

Here is a group that is a little more active than Metal Boat Society.

The concept they represent is very interesting. Bet you could manufacture one of their boats with a big ass sheet of plywood.
Edited to add:
The 35'Roberts ..........
Would be very interesting to see what someone considers about 3/4 finished. If the hull is 3/4 finished the boat is only about 10% finished.

All I know is that the hull is mostly finished and it comes with a trailer.I can make a call to locate the owner's phone number.
