Right now I have two canoes. One is the "cheap" canoe and the other is a Micmac stripper.

At the present I really don't have a good place to put them, so I lean them up agaisn't the house on the ground. I need something more permanant.

In my garage I have mounted two 4x4 posts, about 5' apart, drilled and drove 1/2" pipe with pipe insulation.

Definitely get them off the ground. Hang them up inside the garage, would be my first choice. Second choice would be racks attached to outside garage wall. Protection from sun and rain could be improvised. Or... how about a freestanding rack with a cover. It would take just a couple of pressure-treated posts in the ground, with 2x4's as cross-pieces.

I for sure want to get them off of the ground. The garage is not really an option. All we have is a carport and it is filled up with the wife's car and my weekender. I've thought about trying to build racks on the outside of my shop, kinda like a lumber rack you see at the stores.

If you've got a clear outside wall I would definitely consider a rack, ideally with some sort of a small roof over it. If you were further north I would say watch out for snow building up on the canoes, but I'd guess that the chances of much snow building up in your area are mighty thin! Do watch out for birds nesting in the bow and stern. When a canoe is upside down these areas make a perfect nesting site on many canoes, and the nest material can retain water and promote rot -- not to mention make it hard, mentally speaking, to use your canoe in the spring because it means murdering some baby birds!

The quickest solution to outdoor canoes storage is a couple of sawhorses...

I always wanted to hang a nice wooden canoe UPSIDE-DOWN IN THE DEN, o I could gaze up at it during commercials.

You've got room to spare - Upside down, in the carport, near the ceiling, over the weekender. Four sort-of-rigid hooks allows you to hook one gunnel, and snap the canoe into place at the other gunnel.

A gentler solution to overhead storage is a pair of U-shaped brackes wide enough for the canoe to fit between the arms of the U and with a padded crossbar connecting the arms of the U. Make one fixed and build the other so that the lower bar can hinge down out of the way for loading and unloading the canoe. This does only work if the bracket is low enough so that you can lift the canoe into position without resorting to pulleys and suchlike.

I like the pully idea. I'll have to measure the carport and see if there is enough overhead clearance for me to get the truck in underneth the canoe. This would make for easy loading and unloading.

Just make sure that if you put the canoe on the car, these both will fit through whatever opening there is to exit to the driveway. Maybe not a problem, but if it was and you forgot to check, you'd have one less canoe to worry about storing.

Good point. I havne't checked yet, but I will have to make sure I check that out also.

On the ground is the worst possible place to store them. (Unless they are aluminum.) You are asking for a disaster.

I have 4 canoes at the moment and built a double decker rack attached to one of my minibarns that holds 3 boats, 2 under and one above. My woodstripper hangs in the garage with ropes and pulleys.

I don't know what I'm going to do when I aquire a few more boats. Guess another rack beside the house in in order!

My neighbor already thinks I am "obsessed" with canoes...

This is not hoz's house.
