Does anyone out there know of a place that will paint a boat name onto a standard lifering? I'm looking for something that will look much better than what I could do myself. Thanks.

Does the life ring have a smooth, as in vinyl surface? Could be that the vinyl letters that sign shops make will stick to it. Won't cost you much to try it.

Any decent sign painter ought to be able to do a good job for you.

A lot of sign painters and truck letterers have these nifty computer-controlled vinyl letter and design cutting machines, which can cut self-sticking letters in every size, style and shape imaginable. Give them the dimensions of the ring, choose a letter style, and you get a sheet back with the letters all pre-positioned. Peel the backing off, position on the ring, and pull the carrier sheet off. Nothing easier, and surprisingly cheap. A lot of the schooners around here have their transom designs (complete with stars, striping, and so forth) on file at a local sign painters, and every year get a new transom-sized self-sick sheet, rather than tediously repaint it. Great stuff.

Of course, Norm already mentioned this. Ah, well, gotta be quick around here...

.
And if you can get them made from reflective material, so much the better.

Just go to a good "lettering" shop.
Apart from letting out selfsticking letters they can also let out the negative in form of a selfsticking foil. You can then put this foil on the Ring as a template, paint the ring with special canvas-cover paint and take the foil-template off.

Those companies that put logotypes on Truck-trailer canvas-cover know what kind of paint to use.

I am sorry if I didn't use the right terms. I hope I could give you an idea what to look for.

Vinyl? For heavens sake!
You need to sow the ring into a tight canvas cover, add a loose rope grommet round the outside and paint, paint mind, the ships name on to the white painted canvas. You may add to choice a suitable design, NOT a 'logo', at twelve o'clock. The ships badge or some such. Colours may be Red, White, Blue and a little black and/or gold . Some tasteful rope work on the grommet might be OK but don’t over do it.
Vinyl! On the WBF? Never thought to hear such a thing.

Yeah, that's easy for you to say. We gotta deal with USCG approved stuff.

On the other hand as I've read this thread the idea of making my own life ring has been going around in my vacuum chamber. I could keep a USCG approved throwable device handy to sit on and make a better life ring for show and use.
