mast repair

i need to repair my main wooden mast (the top 6 feet). should i use a 12/1 scarf joint? do i need to match wood types? i am planning on using epoxy.

I would say 12:1 is suitable. Some would use the 'clothespin' scarf for that job. I would certainly make every effort to use the same wood.
