A "Bibby Coffin" - that is to say a ship built of steel by Harland and Wolff in Belfast for the Bibby Line utilising longitudinal framing which permitted a much greater length:beam ratio than had been used heretofore. Since they were expected to sink, they were christened "Bibby Coffins". They did not sink, they made Gustav Wolff's reputation and Bibby's fortune.

Odd footnote; both Bibby Line and Harland and Wolff are still in business - Bibbys still name their ships "....shire"
