These props were observed on all the life boat props aboard Norwegian Crown.

They were directional and I suppose the "wiskers " would fend off some ice . Does any body know or could give a better explanation ?

They are "line and limb" guards. Most rescue/lifeboats now have enclosed props to keep things out of them. I think it is (or will soon be) a SOLAS requirement.

If there's one scenario that's going to include flotsam and jetsam, a sinking ship's going to be it. Not to mention an occasional flailing arm or leg of an otherwise rescued soul.
