What am I? I'm bewildered that's what I am . See those passengers on the foredeck? They are befuddled. By golly Dave if this fog would lift I'd have a much better answer :D

OK, I'm pretty sure I've got it, but I had to use the web to eliminate a bunch of other possiblities first, so I'll keep my mouth shut for now. My first thought was one of the boats that takes people on birding trips out to Machias Seal Island, which is about as far downeast as you can go and still be on a US flagged vessel. However, it seems like those boats are smaller than the one in the picture. I could eliminate a lot of other Maine coast ferries pretty easily, either because I know them from having ridden on them or seen them, or because they are car ferries.

I believe that's Elizabeth Ann, which runs between Port Clyde and Monhegan Island, ME.

I was only partly sure about the boat, but it was the fog that made it obvious. ;)

One August, I saw in the front window of the Port Clyde General Store a sign advertising the availability of

NATIVE ICECUBES

That's what I thought.

Today I made a reservation that will call for me to take that ferry in June. A friend is getting married on Monhegan so I just made a reservation for a room at the Monhegan House...

Bruce, I'm not sure if you'll have the choice, but if you do, take the Laura B instead of Elizabeth Ann. She's a WWII Army T boat, built of wood in Solomons, MD, and beautifully maintained. When the weather's rough, she's the only boat that they run out to Monhegan. And since you'll be so close by, please come for a sail with me on Jenny Norman, in Rockland.

Dave,

The hotel in the picture you posted is, I believe, the Island Inn, which is the big hotel right next to the ferry landing. The Monhegan House is supposed to be a little bit smaller and lower key.

Bugeye,

According to the ferry company's website, the Laura B only makes the early morning run (7AM out of Port Clyde), so I probably will not have much choice because I will be aiming to catch a Friday afternoon boat out and a Sunday midday boat back in. Your suggestion that I join you for a sail sounds enticing but I'm not sure I will have time on this trip. However, I will keep it in mind! Thank you.
