Ok Shane - I try to put this as gentle as possible. Don't get too much agitated! Take a deep breath! Sit down! You may want some liqueur - whiskey, or rum would do the job.

The VALDIVIA has been sold!

I am so sorry. I know that you would have easily had the 300.000 USD to buy the ship. But I couldn't do a thing about it - you must believe me. I didn't even know she was for sale. I just heard it today at the bakery on the way to work.

Take it like a man. Perhaps there will be another 1868 built Newfoundland shooner for sale (?).

Sure, you are right - but I wonder if anybody besides us is looking

The picture you posted is showing Jack Butler, working timber with an adze at Uphams 1957. On his retirement, Jack took up smoking for relaxation. He died in 1998, aged 102. smile.gif

What stroke me when I first saw those pictures from Brixham is thet those guys definetely had style. ALL of them worked at least with white shirt and a tie, often also in a vest. That is cool!

here' is a picture of Bert Snell marking out side timber with chalk:

If you like the Upham Yard's work, you might enjoy reading The Second Mayflower Adventure by Warwick Charleton. (This is from memory; I may be a little off...)

It's the story of building the Mayflower replica that Alan Villiers and crew sailed over to the States.

Well worth reading, I'd say.

Alan

AlanDo I like the Upham Yard's work - I even put my live in one of their creations. Sionnachan was built 1950 at Uphams.

Thanks for the Book-tip. I heard about the book but forgot about it. Now I will try to get one.

Shane - not all is lost!

A friend told me about it and just now I stumbled over it. There is a Modell-kit of the VALDIVIA (in New Zealand  ).

Here is the pic and the link:

Valdivia was built 1868 by the Stora Varvet boatyard in Stockholm, Sweden based on the design of K.C. Agerskov. She was built as Racing Yacht for the Liquorproducer Edvard Cederlund and given the Name VANADIS. she was modelled on the Newfoundland shooner type thet competed in the Americas Cup.

For 30 years she was a private owned Racing Yacht.

In his old age Cederlund donated her to the Royal Swedish Navy were she served as Courier, as Pilot and for hunting down smuggler at the Swedih Coast.

1898/99 she was engaged in a Deep-Sea expedition and sailed around the world.

Until 1914 she could only be sailed by Officers after that other personnel was allowed to sail her also.

1920 she was overhauled and given to the Royal swedish Yacht Club together with the shooner ALBATROS.

1939/40 she was bought by L. Lenmor - the first private owner.

4 more changes of ownership in Sweden until she was sold to Germany 1956. There she received her first engine as well as her curent Name VALDIVIA.

1978-1981 she was totally restored whereby special attention was put on having absolutely no luxury on bord (except a toilet - but no electrical lights, no shower,...)

2002/2003 she has been sold to a new owner, who plans to restore her again - lets see.
