Yesterday I picked up a Westerbeke M25 diesel engine. I really just wanted the Hirth gearbox but the guy did not want to split them. We ended up with both for the price of the gearbox. The engine is built on an English Ford block and is seized up. The head is off and the pistons have been soaking in Marvel Mystery Oil. I don’t think that the pistons are stuck, it could be a bearing problem, I’ll find out later. Margo and I unloaded it last night and put it in the shed.

Does anyone have this model engine or know of a parts source other than Westerbeke? It is a clean little engine with no rust and all the parts are there except for the alternator so it may be worth rebuilding. The same engine block was used in the English Ford Cortina as a gasoline engine. It was also used in the Formula Ford Race cars. The diesel version may have been used in Ford or other farm tractors.

Years ago Weaterbeke was a glorified Perkins....parts were interchangable...dont know if things have changed...might be worth calling a Perkins dealer...

Napa Auto Parts has some parts for these older engines, which were also used in a number of industrial applications. I don't know if the 25 was one of them, but the 40 and 50 were.

Hi,
I had two W80's that came with my boat. One to use and one for parts. All of the older westerbekes are marinized versions of common engines. The basic engine parts are easy to get, but things that usually go bad like heat exchangers and such are difficult to get and rediculously expensive. I decided not to use the westerbeke, and got a good deal on a sabb. Parts are a little, but not much, easier to get, but the variable pitch prop was irresistable to me. I had for awhile considered using a Perkins 4-108, but it was hard to get parts particular to the marine versions. It's surprising that these things are so hard to get, considering how commonplace these engines were in yachts not too long ago.
