I was buying taillights to mount on the transom, in order to stop fooling around with the lights on the trailer, when the guy in the store said the Coast Guard would frown on them. True?

That sounds crazy to me. The Coast Guard has authority over boats in the water not trailers in the parking lot - right?

For what it's worth - I mounted my trailer lights/licence plate on a 2 x 4 that I attach to whatever I'm towing. That way I can store the assembly completely out of harms way and, when in use, it is always in the most visible location.

I presume the guy in the store thought you were going to screw the red lights to your transom and go sailing with them showing two reds and a white astern.
I admit that would confuse me ;)

TRUE NORTH is my SECOND boat to have the lights mounted on the stern. Most Dovekies and Shearwaters are rigged this kway from the builder, Edey & Duff.
The Police in Long Lake and Mound, MN frowned on them, but we reached an agreement whereupon I would mount the lights and license "temporarily" on the trailer after launching the boat, instead of putting them in the back of the tow vehicle.
No other location has ever objected.

Actually it's gonna be four small lights, after farting around with the corroded trailer lights yet again. I don't care how much you pay, they're only good for a season at most, unless you get LEDs for 80 bucks.
The 48ft/lb trolling motor was a dud. Hit a top speed of 1.8 knots, then the battery died on the way in. Had to beach the boat, walk to the car, and switch batteries. Screw this. Anybody want a nice lightly used trolling motor?
