Nice pix of those schooners Brian thanks. I wonder why some carried their side lights on after shrowds ? Noticed whalers did that also. Maybe alone on deck at night the helmsman could check if they were lit easier.

The pilot boats were rigged so one man could handle them to get back to port with all the pilots on other ships, reduce headcount reduce costs not a new concept. Look at the 6 part peak halyard, less force so one can handle it but miles of line. smile.gif

THE Roseway and the Pilot!....they are/were wonderful boats.....I got to help my Father work on the Roseway/Pilot in the fifties...he did all there sheet metal work.( he was old world tinknocker from the old country)...it was docked across the street from the "old mans" shop...East Boston.....a great time of my teen age life.....we had some great meals on board.....and they liked their whiskey. :D

I think it was two weeks ...at the outer harbor off Nahant...then two weeks at the dock...great life....except in January/February.
One year they caught a basking whale shark....they hauled it up the foremast...it was almost as long!
