Sadly, LIBERTY, the 80' Bruce King designed commuter yacht http://www.bkyd.com/t-liberty.jpg ran aground recently and sustained damage that will put her out of action for awhile.
Perhaps she'll be back in the water in time for the Shipyard Cup Regatta www.shipyardcup.com (http://www.shipyardcup.com) in a week or so.

One just has to ask, WHY?

Probably hit some of that hydraulically controlled ledge that Hodgdon has scattered about. ;)

According to a crewman I talked to at the yard today, where she was being blocked up, cleaned and and checked over, the keel/skeg is cracked and dented for a length of about 30 feet and each prop is dented pretty badly on all five blades. No damage to shafts, struts or engines, but she'll be out of action for a while.
The owner hit a ledge near his dock. That's all I could gather.

I know the boat, it's a nice one smile.gif Maybe that explains why we saw Ragtime this weekend instead. Ledges abound out here; they've been hit before and they'll be hit again. Hopefully the recovery is quick and painless. At least we know he can afford it

Note to myself:
Seek inexpensive methods of locating ledges near the dock.

Turns out that at least one of the carbon fiber shaft struts was cracked, necessitating removal of tanks and a generator to replace with new. $200,000 repair estimate according to reliable source.

damn what a pretty boat, reminds me of Aphrodite, intentionally I'm sure, but 200,000.00 to repair damage to her drives and skegs. What would it cost to replace the entire boat.
BTW, I bet that was a sickening sound at impact?

His dock is in a pretty secluded spot called Oven's Mouth (cool name, huh?) and there were no onlookers. No one but the owner and his party were there and they aren't talking about it much, I imagine.
"When a tree falls in the woods...."
Which reminds me of the 'Deep Thoughts by Jack Handy" joke:
If trees could scream, would we be so cavalier about cutting them down? We might, if they screamed all the time, for no good reason.

If a fellow speaks in the forest and his wife isn't there to hear him, is he still wrong?

Can't find the reference, but I recall reading somewhere that it originally cost well over a million. And it looked it (at least before it ran aground). So yes, it would cost a lot more to replace than fix. Anyway, we wouldn't want to lose a nice mostly-wooden boat like that from the ranks. Although I wonder if it would be a simpler/cheaper repair if carbon fiber weren't involved. Maybe high-tech isn't always the better solution.
