Wow  The Hull is gorgeous, the engines are breath-taking and the whole contraption is simply magnificent. Thanks for posting it!

Buzz Kaplan built that replica for SC Johnson. I believe the plane was built here in Minnesota. I saw it once--neat plane. I would love to fly it once.
Buzz passed away a few years ago in the crash of a 1917 Curtis Jenny near the Owatonna, MN airport.

Is that the Johnson's wax flying boat? I think I saw it once at Oshkosh.

Dan, that's the replica. There are no original ones anymore. The EAA has a half replica in their museum at OSH

The Rules of the Road were changed last year to include these. Once a strictly Russian construct, they're apparently gaining popularity as a fast ferry possibility. A cross between a hovercraft and an airplane, they rely on the surface effect to "fly" and can't rise more than a few feet above the water.

You see pelicans use that surface effect all the time, and pilots, especially of low wing airplanes feel it every time they land and the aircraft sort of floats above the runway longer than your rate of descent suggests you would.
I wonder what happens when they kiss a big wave?

I had a ride in this once.

An interesting application of rigid sails on the Johnson, but aren't they raked a bit far overboard?

....those side pontoons on the S38...now why don't you see them on narrow beam sailboats...stiffens it up when it heels in a blow but ride above the water downwind.
