I plan to keep a sailboat on a mooring in the Mount Desert area next summer, and need a dinghy to get out to it. Can some of the Maine folks recommend where I might pick one up reasonably?

When you arrive in Maine you could buy a copy of Uncle Henry's at almost any convenience store. It's a state wide 'swapsheet' that comes out each Thursday at about 11:00 am or so. You can also look at it online at http://www.unclehenrys.com to get a feel for what kinds of boats are for sale. To see price and phone contact numbers you have to subscribe online, however.

Now might be a good time to buy a dinghy actually, if you could get the seller to keep it for you over the winter. If you see something you like, post your interest here and maybe a Maine forum member could get the contact info for you or even check out the dinghy. (I'd do it but I'm back in Georgia now.)

Good luck-

No, no, NO!!!

Look, you have a long, cold winter ahead of you, just build yourself one. The garage makes a nice (cool) retreat and you have something to show for your efforts in the spring. Most importantly, the beer stays cold in the garage without any effort. ;)

Thanks RBGarr and Cap -

I don't think building it is workable because I don't want to have to haul it to Maine. I'm in the midwest. I'm also no Art Read and would probably end up accidentally epoxying my finger to my nose.

"epoxying finger to your nose"... at least you'd look wise that way... better than epoxying your fingers together or finger to eyeball

As mentioned above, Uncle Henry's is a great resource for your search. Not sure what your definition of 'reasonable price' is but you might give Charlie Dhyse a call to chat about your requirements. Charlie runs Maine Coast Boathouse and the sale of small wooden boats is what he specializes in. Last I knew, his phone# was 207-339-0100.

Oops. Just looked up the number...should be 338-0100.
