I'm going to build on of these for my niece, I do it with her, but by that time she'd be grown up at this rate.

I want to stay away from googe as much as possible, so I was thinking about adding stems and using external chines to cover the ply edge. Do you see any problems with that?

Laura was 15 when she built her Cheap Canoe. No problem with epoxy but she's a neat kid in every sence. But to answer your question, I see no reason you can't use chines and stuf-in-a-tube if you wish. I'll post the slide show of her building later today.

Use the lines of the Cheap Canoe and built it like a Six-Hour, no epoxy and Norm's yer Grandpa.

I don't have the patients to download and install the plugin right now. But I did go through the album. I'll probably glue it with epoxy, I just don't feel like messing with tape and fillits. I'm getting grampa practice with this one smile.gif

Greg,
One of the attributes of a desireable canoe is lightness. Canoes that are overweight see the water less and less.
I paddle Mertens' Cheap Canoe religiously because I can cartop it alone, portage it alone and paddle it without strain. It handles nicely and can handle a modest amount of bad water.
At $285 and 45 lbs. it's a winner. All I can say is "blessed be West Systems and the almighty gods of fiberglass tape".
If chine logs and flathead screws turn you on go ahead but your not making the boat any better.

Our baby the legendary "Canoeythingy" was built with no googe no glass and just 1/2 round strips around the bare edges of the ply to keep water ingress at bay and several strips as keels dowun her undersides {she tracks a dream by the by}... that said I did take out a bit of "insurance" and whack some silicone around the underbum areas slathered with paint and shes the ducks knuts...

Canoeythingy is hootin around happily carryin the hoons and yours truely without a worry in the world. :D

Good to hear she's going strong. I'm using shoe mould at the bottom edges of the side panels, and letting it stand proud the thickness of the bottom plywood to make ledge. The bottom panel will sit on the lower edge of the side panels with it's edge protected by the shoe mould. I also made stem pieces so the ends will be nice and strong. I'm useing epoxy as glue, since I have a lot of leftover dribs and drabs, just couldn't face sanding anymore fillets tongue.gif .

Do you think it would tolerate 3 thin grounding strips, without making it too hard to turn? I'd like to stiffen up the bottom if I could.
