Perhaps one of the most memorable comments in my life came from the mouth of my twelve year old son just a month ago. Recall that there is something about being twelve that requires you to be guarded in what you say in the presence of your folks. Oh it is fine to talk, just don't let those true feelings out. The best strategy is to keep it inside - all the better to keep them guessing. At least this was my own take on pre-adolescence. Now as a father of my own twelve year old he (ahem!) seems to have inherited this trait from someone. smile.gif

The scene is he and I launching my new skiff. We leave the dock and just a ghost of a breeze gets us under way. He is up front looking out over the bow. I am in the stern. Gazing out over the lake he says out loud, but clearly to himself, "This is soooo cool... we are sailing in a boat that my dad built." He didn't turn around and seemed to have forgotten momentarily that I was even in the boat. I'll never forget it. Never.

Yeah, thats a keeper. I think every parent who takes an interest in their children has a couple of keepers that validate their ability to be a good parent.

My wife and I need to get busy on a son like that! We'll probably have a little girl, likely, but that is great to hear!

It brings tears to the eye and a bit of a lump in the throat. Truly what life is about.

Wet eyes here. Searching memory banks for something similar with my daughters. the oldest actually telling me she can fix "anything" because I showed here how and gave her the right tools. The youngest, that I knew how to pick out the best horse. Those comments get me through the many times when I "just don't understand- it's different from when you were my age" has to work itself out through months or years of troubles ( in their lives) to " you told me but,you know me, I have to learn everything the hard way." I imagine most parents have shared similar.
