Up until last fall's hurricane you could sail aboard her larger sister "Marr", owned by the brewing Oland family (I think), in Halifax.
I did once. What a marvellous ship. I only had the standard 3-hour harbour excursion, but it was tremendous. Initially I thought she was clunky, until a modern 24ft FG sloop came out and sailed along side. The sloop was heeled right over, spray was flying, her crew were in oilskins and flinching from the cold water and she was thrashing her way along in what looked like half a gale. And she was gaining maybe a quarter knot on Marr, where we stood upright, dry, on a wide deck, with very little motion, in all that wooden splendour, with 25 people on board and a crew of 3. Appetizers were served by a girl walking along the decks holding a tray. The wind was about 15 knots. Marr shouldered her way through the chop effortlessly.
And down below, her Great Cabin in the stern was a magnificent tribute to varnished mahogany, with a full stern seat under the square windows, a 4-poster bed, a bookcase and writing desk -- a fabulous place for her original owner, Ernest Gann, to make a living. Ambience like you wouldn't believe.
She went ashore during the hurricane. I sure hope she returns to Privateer's Wharf.

The vessel David is referring to is the Mar II (sorry, David, but I thought some might get frustrated if they did a web search on the wrong name). I haven't heard anything lately on her condition after the hurricane. Maybe one of our correspondents who live closer to Halifax can shed some light on this.

Oops. Thanks, MMD. And I guess she was never owned by the Olands?
Here's a link to a photo of her after the hurricane:

I believe that the Mar II is in the Lunenburg Foundry yard for repairs. Bill Lutwick and his yard patched her up in Halifax after the storm, and then she was brought down here. Her (huge) bowsprit was snapped in the storm and I saw the new one that Bill made - a work of art.

Nice boat, but...
1. Its not a Baltic Trader (wrong label)! Baltic Trader were mostly (90%) built in Marstal, Denmark and were bigger and had a different stern. This one looks more like a fishing boat.
2. The cabin is too big.
3. I hope the original "Hundested" engine is still in that hull. No sound is better than a single-piston Hundested!

I'd kill to own a Hundested single. I think I read that they tick over at about 50 rpm, and were often left running 24/7 in the winter. Bill Garden designed MUD THUMPER around a big Hundested for the owner of the engine. I wonder where that boat is now...
