Helmsman, port and starboard trimmers, bowman and pitman.
Yeah, you could get around the course with 4 (several do, I think) by splitting the pitman's duties among others, but this is a world championship regatta of a strictly controlled one-design class. It's not uncommon for the difference between first and fourth to be less than ten seconds. Every little bit counts.
A few weeks ago at the 'Round Fisher's Island race, the first three boats finished within 30 seconds at the end of a three hour race. These guys are TIGHT!
and DAMN those are some gorgeous boats!! A pity that you need to be a 50 year old millionaire to own one.
