I've forgotten the source of this quote, I may also have mangled it - I think I found it in a Michael Richey article about ten years ago.
He hath placed the signs in the sky that a man with knowledge might find his way. Any ideas?

It is , or seems to me to be...a rewording of common viking saying, and later among northern indian tribes...the Native american wording being that the great spirit had placed the stars so that the tribe might find it's way....

I did a google search and found something similar in the Koran Surah 164

Here is one translation:

Behold! in the creation of the heavens and the earth; in the alternation of the night and the day; in the sailing of the ships through the ocean for the profit of mankind; in the rain which God Sends down from the skies, and the life which He gives therewith to an earth that is dead; in the beasts of all kinds that He scatters through the earth; in the change of the winds, and the clouds which they Trail like their slaves between the sky and the earth;- (Here) indeed are Signs for a people that are wise.

There are other translations here http://www.qurantoday.com/BaqSec20.htm#Verse2:164

There must be similar texts in books of other religions; Bible, Torah and etc, who believe that Abraham was variously killing/ not killing his son, because of some voice in his head. Having sex with his slave and or wife and various other myths.

Paladin and Hwyl, Thanks I hadn't thought of the Viking or North american links - many possibilities.

My own top guess was the Koran and I can see that the Surah 164 might have given rise to this.

Just admired the sentence.

IMHO, religion is not a proper substitute for careful navigation.
