Here's what I found in Rockland Harbor this week:

"schooner" rigged galleon, built for handicapped access.

note chainplates, portlights, and boarding ladder-which is not secured to the boat or dock

figurehead is classic folk art. Actually, the whole project could be considered floating folk art....

I'm looking for a link to some of the stories written about the man from Addison, ME who followed his vision to build a vessel to take handicapped kids to sea on a Christian mission.

I'll check back later

Wellll...to each his own I guess! It takes all types...

The combination of that figurehead and the flag on the transom is, shall we say, a bit of an odd combination!

Sure would be interesting to see a Coast Guard approval for carrying passengers on it.

Reminds me of the story about a researcher who tried to prove the efficacy of prayer by looking at sailing ships that failed to reach their destination. Seems he found that a slightly higher, though statistically insignificant, number of ships carrying missionaries reached their destination that did ships not carrying missionaries.

Norm your comments beg the further question for study; "Vs winged figure heads" :D .

Saw the boat when coming in to Rockland harbor last weekend. Innitial reaction was along the lines of "what the darned heck is THAT?!?". Subsequent examination insipired similar exclamations. I admire the builder's drive to achieve their goals, but there sure is no accounting for taste ;)

Hugh, I posted their website here a couple of years ago. I'll try to find it again.

This appeared in the news today:

Raw Faith running on faith - and fumes (http://rockland.villagesoup.com/Community/Story.cfm?StoryID=26241)

They appear to have a web site hereaccessiblesailing.info (http://accessiblesailing.info) and here rawfaith.org (http://www.rawfaith.org). They were working earlier today, though they appear kaput at the moment. They weren't terribly well constructed or informative; hopefully they're being updated.

There is a statement in the news article about RawFaith being "perhaps the only wheelchair accessible tall ship in the world." The operative word is "perhaps", since the barques Lord Nelson (steel) and Tennacious (wood!) are both designed specifically to be handicapped accessible, and have been sailing successfully for a few years now. The only reason I know this is because a friend of mine who happens to be deaf sailed on Tennacious a year or so ago.

Ummmm, is the concept of disability in the business plan causative or resultant?

Geezlaweez.

Looks like rudder failure is in his future as soon as he hits a few big waves

Jeff SmithIt doesn't appeared to be moused, does it?

Thanks for the links, guys.

The Rockland harbormaster is concerned about it's seaworthness, too. Word is he is having a conversation with appropriate people.

I have to wonder about the spars. I seem to remember the Raw Faith web site saying the spars were just trees, debarked and shaped (by hand).

Yep... found stuff...

The specifications say:
Masts
. . 3 masts . . 60', 70' and 60' of laminated spruce,
hollow hexagon, 24" diameter at base tapered to 12" top. Wall thickness is 6"
Those numbers and descriptions seem to be in order (although I'll not pretend to know how to size/engineer spars) but the volunteer for projects page says:
Masts & Spars

Description

Strip the bark off three masts and 6 spars.* Prep the surface by sanding and planing smooth..

Estimated Project Costs:

$50.
I have to believe that the project started out with good intentions and possibly even good planning but succumbed to the (extreme?) pressures of budget. It is probably a lot cheaper to shape trees for spars, but you don't get to engineer in any benefits.

How many other specifications were relaxed for the sake of cost exediency?

I have kerosine lamps on IVY... but I am not trying to light up the inside of a large vessel with 4 dollar store kerosine lamps...
