After looking through the FAQ I would appreciate very much if you would add a reply to the thread to help keep it on the first page, until other arrangements can be made. Thank You.

Copper Air Tanks for Canoes (http://www.woodenboat-ubb.com/vbulletin/upload/showthread.php?t=2485)

The Vbulletin search engine is a bit of a disappointment. When I search "Copper Air Tanks" (with or without quotation marks) the search engine returns "Sorry, no matches."

Is it me or are there a lot of threads no longer in the database? It seems like I am coming up empty on 1/3 of attempts, requiring reposts from net caches.

I have about given up on the "search title function only" function; most of my luck has been with the "search entire article" function.

Comments?

Ross

PS: I do not fault the new software for the lost threads; I think the old system was slowly dropping threads. Just curious if others are having similar difficulties.

Thanks guys, I'm currently working on "C". The search function works sometimes when you're looking for thread titles, sometimes it helps if you know the thread's author. Sometimes you just search by author and page through the threads. It'll get done, it just going to take some time. Thanks again, Jim

You know vBulletin has a feature called a "sticky" that will hold the thread on the first page indefinitely, directly at the top of the page.

I know that this FAQ has only just been built up again, but I think it would be an excellent idea to start a WikiBook (http://en.wikibooks.org/wiki/Help). I think it would be a much better format for this sort of information.

Here are the instructions on how to start a new one: http://en.wikibooks.org/wiki/Help:How_to_start_a_book

Great info - but still difficult to search through and very opinion-riddled.

Texas Boater, I don't agree with you. I think it is much easier to structure reference information in a Wiki format. It's possible to arrange the information in chapters and sections with a table of contents, etc., just as it would be arranged in a real book. There is the added benefit over a book that hyperlinks can be created for cross references (this can be done in the forum too of course). The search function appears to be effective. Here is an example of a good effort:

http://en.wikibooks.org/wiki/European_History/Contents

Before I continue, I should say that I am in no way criticising the FAQ here. I think that it's an excellent resource and I have relied on the information it provides for many jobs on my own boat. I am very grateful for people's hard work.

The forum that WB boat provides is very good, but the software is intended to be used as a discussion forum. The near loss of the FAQ with the upgrade is a good example of the mismatch.

I posted because I recently became aware of WikiBooks when some people started one for the area of the software industry that I work in. Before that the only easy way to find information was to trawl through varous forums. When the Wiki appeared it suddenly became so much more easy to find the answers to common problems. You can even have a printable version to take onboard with you.

I think that the Wiki format encourages people who feel they have real knowledge to contribute. Of course, what is written is based on someone's opinion (isn't that the same with this forum, or a printed book?). The good thing about a Wiki is that if something is wrong, you can change it. In my experience very few people have the arrogance to change expert text that someone else has written, unless they know what they are talking about. This creates quite a high barrier to bad information being published.

I don't have much spare time, but I would be happy to start setting up an example WikiBook if I felt that the idea had some backing. Note that I would not be authoring any information (just transferring it). Can people please shoot the idea down now if they think it is a no go or have objections? I am making the assumption that any postings on this list are automatically in the public domain and that no one makes any claim to intellectual property here. Am I right about that?

Bob I just tried to access your thread on makeing spar planes and I got a "V Bullitin" informing me it was 10 am last Friday and the forum was temporarily unavailable .

Pull up the old link ion a new window and look at it. Ya gotta take out a "-ubb" and replace it with a "vb", then all a "/www/" between ".com" and "vbulletin"

Thus:

http://www.woodenboatvb.com/www/vbulletin/upload/showthread.php?t=9360

Or better yet, wait for the September WB where there's a more thorough article on p. 192.

Edited to add....I fixed all my links, but the rest of the faq still needs the url modifications.

Bob Smalser

The urls changed again while I wasn't looking. Now they should read "woodenboatvb.com/vbulletin" , removing the "www".

Here's my contributions with the url's fixed:

Scot could put this thread on a "stickie", like http://www.owwm.org does.

11-26-2006, 11:06 AM
Well, Scott does have the FAQ link on the top menu, so perhaps he could just have this as well as the "how to post photos" link there?

Not sure about anything like stickies or popup windows, as many folks set their browsers to block 'em. When I hit the link above, I don't see anything but the menu link to their FAQ list.

This Old Boat
04-13-2007, 12:41 PM
Hello,

My name is Gardner J. Combs. I'm the Executive Producer for a new television program called "This Old Boat." The program format is very similar to This Old House. We'll have a restoration project that extends through 6 to 13 episodes covering both power and sail boats. The projects will vary in degree and complexity, and will focus on old, beautiful, classic wooden boats. The program will showcase the craftsman and demonstrate the craftsmanship, materials, and techniques used for old wooden boat restoration. The show will include additional segments where the Host travels to various restoration related places such as major boat building and material manufacturing facilities. Fully restored boats will also be shown. There will also be a Viewer Mail segment where we get the experts to answer common viewer questions. We believe that the program will be entertaining, informative, welcomed, and widely watched.

We are currently looking for our first project boat. We need to find a restoration yard somewhere near the Chesapeake Bay area with a Hinckley restoration or major repair project that is about to begin. If you have any information that might help, I would certainly appreciate hearing it. I love the Wooden Boat magazine. Our program will be of the same high quality.

Also, check out our website www.ThisOldBoat.com (http://www.thisoldboat.com/) and register.

Thanks

I tried using a few of the links, from a post on page 1, by Ross M., dated 04-12-2006, 07:45 PM, on epoxy. My particular interests were those on CPES. When following the link, an error message of "no page found" occurs. If the link no longer exists, do I just bring up an old FAQ question in the building/repair forum again?

Ron Paro
02-29-2008, 09:03 PM
JOBBER, try this Google Advanced Search link for threads on CPES:
http://www.google.com/search?as_q=CPES&hl=en&num=10&btnG=Google+Search&as_epq=&as_oq=&as_eq=&lr=&cr=&as_ft=i&as_filetype=&as_qdr=all&as_nlo=&as_nhi=&as_occt=any&as_dt=i&as_sitesearch=woodenboat.com&as_rights=&safe=images

I have found that Google actually has better search results that the search feature which is part of the forum site. From the Google Home Page (google.com), select Advanced Search, then enter the search term, and in the next section down find the field for Domain. Enter woodenboat.com and then click search.

I hope this helps you and anyone else with searching the wealth of info in these forum pages. - Ron
