Does anyone know what the proper sharpening angle is for the AP10 planer knives? The unit came with a honing fixture but the knives have to be sharpened at the proper angle to have both cutting surfaces rest on the stone or wet/dry paper. I don't see it in the original manual and the Ryobi site is too data intensive for my slow 26400 dial up to handle.
There's a great place here in Detroit (Hayes Grinding) to get knives sharpened, but sometimes you have to tell them what angle to set in order to use the honing fixture later on.

sorry for the slightly off-topic response: How do you like your Ryobi planer? I'm thinking of buying the AP1300...

The AP10 model number did not come up at the Ryobis site. I found several replacement sets on the net at around $25-30. Wasn't able to locate the angle for you though.

Drake, I've put miles of lumber through it and it's a good unit as long as you keep the knives sharp and don't try to plane large knots. The AP10 is no longer available from what I've heard, and I don't know much about the AP13.
The knives are bi-metal, I don't think the insert is carbide, but it acts like it. It takes quite a while to hone a good edge but it's worth it. I saw quite a few complaints about the DeWalt unit's poor blades. If I can get a good photo of the AP10 knives I'll post it so you know what to look for. I'm happy with it.

Capt Jake, I bought a $30 set of knives several years ago and they were HSS grade. They died after a couple of passes through Oak. I found it was worth it to buy a couple extra sets so you can have one set at the grinder and stay productive with the spares. I remember the OEM knives were $65 about ten years ago, but I choked it down and still don't regret it. (but I didn't tell my wife what I spent)

We haven't heard from you for a while Rich.
How's progress on the 22?

Great planer for me!!! It's now about / over 15 years old. I've only had to replace a belt when I inadvertantly and inattentively tried to plane some wedge shaped boards.

I've always had my blades sharpened professionally -it's worth it.
