I've made Stainless steel pintle straps. The lower will attach to the completed rudder box at the level of the rudder blade pivot--the blade pivot bolt will go though the pintle strap. A seperate upper pintle strap will attach about a foot above that, in the area of the diagonal brace.

Here is my question: Should I through bolt the upper pintle strap and leading edge of the lower pintle strap or should I just screw into the internal bracing? Avoiding through bolting would be easier.

These are older pics which I happen to have on imagestation. The rudder box is now completed with the plywood sides now attached.

I'm on the road as I post this. I do have more current pics which I will post over the weekend.

Thank You

While I doubt that the stresses would be so great as to absolutely require through bolting, I'd do it anyway. Stick a little compression block in if it misses the diagonal. If you don't want to take one cheek off, it looks as though you could bore through both cheeks and then slide a block in place, drill it, and bolt.

Joe, A through bolt at the upper pintle would at the very least match the lower assembly but more important it would balance any stress over the entire rudder box.

What do the plans show?

"What do the plans show?"
Abe,
They don't. This weekend, I'll post pics with the pintle straps in postion--or better yet--I'll just bring them over.
