View Full Version : How to Post a Photo in the New Format?

Dave Hadfield

Well, I haven't a clue.

Would someone please instruct the rest of us, clearly, step-by-step, without assuming much, in how to post a photo?

I have in mind clear instructions like Norm Messinger worked out in the old layout. Many people used that.

Thanks,

Dave

Pretty much same as the old way except instead of clicking on 'Image' at the bottom of the old format to paste the image url you click on the 'Insert Image' icon at the top. It's the yellow square with what looks like two mountains or pyramids with a sun or other celestial body hovering above them, perhaps decending in a slow arc as the forum spins.

Where is this yellow square? " . . .as forum spins"?

What I haven't remembered is how to resize photos.

The yellow square doesn't show in the default reply window. You have to go to "User CP" (the control panel), then "edit options", then go down to Misc. options and select the second or third choices. Then you'll have the "yellow square"

From what I can tell, on the new Forum you do the following:
1. Click the "User CP" link in the browser window in the top left of the menu bar.
2. Click the "Edit Options" link about 1/4 of the way down the left column.
3. In the "Misc Options" at the bottom of the next page, select "Enhanced Interface" from the pulldown list.
4. In this interface, click the "insert photo" icon --> a little yellow square icon with the stamp in the upper right corner, the mountains in the lower center.

I got as far as selecting " enhanced interface" .but I never saw any yellow square appear. where does this come from?

Dale -- Go back and see if your changes were 'saved' -- it took me two tries to figger it out. Once selected, you will see the yellow icon in the "Quick Reply" window at the end of every thread, along with the other icons for fonts, links, quotes, etc.

Paul Scheuer
04-14-2006, 11:23 AM
When you've gone to "CP" then "Edit Options" then "Miscelaneous Options" and selected "Enhanced - " and "Save changes", the "Insert Image" box should show up on the toolbar above the new message area in "Post Reply" or "Quick Reply".

If it doesn't, you didn't get the options saved correctly. Go back through CP -Edit- Misc- to the "Enhanced - "/ "Basic" selection, if it doesn't say "Enhanced" change it and save the change.

Dave Hadfield
04-14-2006, 11:34 AM
Hey, it worked!

Yes, after selecting "Enhanced Interface" you've got to hit enter. If you do that, then the yellow image box shows up on the reply page, and then the process is the same as before.

Thanks guys!

I find that I just keep doing it the way I did before. I type in the photo link and it works just like before.

Note: All these "cool" features were available on the old forum, you just had to put in the right html code. Now they provide quick links to these codes.

Ive had an issue with image posting where if I try to link to a normal sized pic all I get is the link but if use a smaller version the pic shows up. Is there a size limit? These pics are not big by any means, pretty much the same as above shots.

Thorne
04-21-2006, 12:07 PM
Remember that image size is measured in two ways: dimensions and pixel depth (aka file size).

A 100 x 100 pixel file at 72 dots per inch (dpi) can be 50 k, but the same file at 300 dpi can be 3 Mb. 72 dpi is the target for posting online, as most monitors can't display any more information/pixel depth -- the image's display size just increases to match the 72 dpi, which means the above 100 x 100 image might display at 1500 x 1500 at 300 dpi.

The simple fix can be to change the settings on your camera, at least temporarily, so the file pixel depth / size is smaller for the same dimensional size. Other programs have "Save for Email" options but I'm not familiar with how these work.

I use Photoshop's "Save for Web" function, which strips out much of the hidden information, icons, etc that are part of most photos taken with digital cameras -- this reduces file size by 2/3 or more!

'Last Fling' built by Leo Schovers. Leo told me that building this boat was his last fling. He has built many boats over the years but he is getting on a bit now.

I posted this image to see how much Image Station corrupted the original ... uh! Image Station couldn't handle the detail in the water at all well. It is like what Jamie UNCAS once said, "you get what you pay for." One thing that I didn't pay for was water that looks like .... a bowl of grey rice?

Thorne
04-21-2006, 01:24 PM
I've been wondering why more folks don't use their own webspace -- after all, they are paying for it!

This is the web storage space that comes with nearly all ISP accounts, whether they are dialup, DSL, Cable or Satellite.

All you need is a simple FTP program, and the name/pw for your webspace access -- which you can get by calling your ISP. Upload the photos and, voilia!, they are accessible via the URL for each:

http://www.yourISP.~youraccountname.jpg (http://www.yourISP.%7Eyouraccountname.jpg) (or whatever)

I have my own domain, so mine is simpler, but they all work well, no loss of images over time, or image quality. The free services seem to be a real trap - try viewing threads from a few years ago, and you'll find nearly all the images inaccessible, which greatly reduces the value of these threads when they rely on the image to illustrate a problem or issue or solution.

Thorne brave? Is that because I look like Braveheart? That is a solid tag to be considered brave. I'm starting to get the feel for this boat painting. It is all in the photography.

Bob (who is a top worker) and I were absolutely filthy today. We walked into the yacht club through the back door to buy a cleansing ale ... straight into a wedding party. The look on their faces was brilliant, the colour struck fear into the congregation. I told the bride to step a side before she got blue on her dress. She didn't hesitate.

When we got our drinks the wedding photographer came outside and started talking to us ... he mumbled something about wode. I disappointed him when I told him it was just antifoul and he went back inside. He can make his own war paint ... we did.

What a nice way to start the day, looking at a photo of Stephen who is showing signs of cyanosis.

Cyanosis, bluish discolouration of the skin, lips and nail beds caused by insufficient oxygen in the blood ... my first aid manual says nothing about accident management of bottom paint so it has to be cyanisis. Was he also starved of oxygen at birth?

I am afraid, I'm very affraid ... hide your new brides. Old brides could fancy a bit of wode.

Wonderful photos Ocean Spray. The prams are very cool ... the true essence of sailing and just simple fun. Awesome.

Wode is the blue dye that Celtic warriors (and Mel Gibson) used to paint themselves with before battle -- according to popular myth.

In actuality it may be that this was more tatooing than dye-jobs, but the Romans weren't great factual reporters when it came to their enemies...

My guess would be that the "http=" part of the url for the photo is duplicated. When the URL box is displated after clicking on the icon (the one with the mountain and sun) "http=" is already entered in the box. Try deleting everything in the input box before you paste the url for the photo.

Peter,

What I do is very unscientific but it seems to work.
Open the post reply box in the topic.
Then open another internet window leaving the first window open.
Bring up the picture you want to post in the second window.
Left click on the image and drag it over the box in the tool bar at the bottom of the screen representing the wooden boat forum.
This will bring the forum window back up on the screen.
Poaition the cursur over the reply box and release the mouse button.
With a lot of luck the image will be in the box.

What you missed was getting the URL between the -- brackets, either by typing the bracket set or using the instant tools. Check to be sure that you don't have two http//'s, edit as necessary. I’ve uploaded a picture here:

http://foto.telenet.be/Photos/Albums/Photo.aspx?id=S4poKdGydHqNS5VflqVbb!L6lQtz35FGTsxf WU2XweWNYCIDmYHB2GXKLqIdKnqjaG (http://foto.telenet.be/Photos/Albums/Photo.aspx?id=S4poKdGydHqNS5VflqVbb%21L6lQtz35FGTs xfWU2XweWNYCIDmYHB2GXKLqIdKnqjaG)

To find the URL, right-click in the middle of the picture. A pop-up will appear: it will be looking something like this:

http://us3.pixagogo.com/S5k3%21ZCYnkO43JaWRfanQaqWJHTlYP9-3M1I0WBhRGLbCjXttYYq-ck7D4DZKk2Y4dQyuq487x%21LIFpNlSFRPBNQ__/2.jpg

You can copy the url of the picture by clicking on “copy image location”or something (I’m using the dutch language version of windows XP as you can see, it’s “afbeeldingslocatie kopiëren” for me)

You can also find the url by clicking “eigenschappen”. (I think that will be “properties“ for you.)

Anyway, past the url in the pop-up that appears when you click the “Insert image” in the post reply box and the picture will show in your reply

Perhaps you didn't copy the entire url of your pictures? At the end of the url, you should have the name of the picture and its extension: ".jpg" or something

The entire url of my photo is:http://us4.pixagogo.com/S5zbTG1dgOCeAORbNGLHcokZ77jeykko5rrI12nXEDkp1h0oCs XPp14razbHKOKHaYxKCfmTH6TdDPbQ7VhVO5SMi6k-1whioVLHansFAoZtopjPJcj%21mkuw__/Afbeelding_009.jpg

The URL is always short. Great big long ones tend to get cut off.

It looks like you might have used the URL of a thumbnail image. Other than that It worked fine.
