That's cool, JD.

Tell me, please, what kind of wood did you use, and what tools to cut wood that small?

Later,

Phil

Here is a simple sailing pond model made with a stitch and glue hull. I've posted some specs and building pictures on Imagestation with this picture. Ballast is 4 ounces of lead at the bottom of the sheet metal keel. I think the rest of the info needed to build it is there. Sails are just a light cotton/poly blend with iron on seam tape folded over the edges, both from the fabric store.

The wood is clear sugar pine glued up in "lifts". I have a fair array of model tools including a miniature table saw. It doesn't tilt or have a depth of cut capacity but it beats ripping by Xacto blades. That's real marine grade paint on her including the anti fouling paint. Same colors as my sprit rigged sharpie "Carrianne".

Beautiful models.

I've been looking for awhile for an R/C Lightning, to no avail. Anyone have a lead on something of its ilk?

I live right across the street from a large inner-city lake, with ducks, geese, fountain, rented paddle boats and the occasional body. ;) And I've been thinking that the one thing that's missing is model sailboats, like you see in pictures of the days of old.

Gonna see if I can't get a nice community phenomenon goin' on. :D

The WoodenBoat store sells Lightning kits. You will have to get your own RC though.

What the heck? I search all over hell and back and eventually find it in our backyard?

Sheesh. There've been books written about that. :)

Unfortunately, "(Not designed for remote control)". Ugh. That means I'll have to do maths.

I hate maths.

:D

Thanks for the heads up. Ordered 1.

Bob ,

Just how big is that mirror dinghy model ? Has it ever healed enough to ship water ?. It looks good and where did you get the plans ?

Brian, Also where did you get the plans for that model you posted. It looks just right for my 3 yr old grand son to sail around with.

No plans, it was a kit bought from a dealer in Canada. Forget the name of the mfgr. She's taken a little water from time to time but no problems. Dealer was Climateworks.
Actually built two of them. The first one took an errant track and before I could rescue her someone had taken her. The second one was sailing along beautifully and suddenly just started to submerge like a sub. Gone.

The cabin roof on my model is removeable for gear acces. I put a length of steel fishing leader on a spool attached to the roof and the keel and a piece of styrofoan under the roof. If (when) it ships too much water the roof floats but is still attached to the boat for retrieval. A week of drying out and all is fine.;)

Im going to make a scale model of Elly from Michaels study plans... if I ever get the time

I will as I did with the model of the luggar I made have a wee issue with young Joshy when its done... unless I make it so he can use it in the creek that is maybe I should just make him a quickie one first?

For now I satisfy myself with doing half models... but Ive not had the time to figure out how to post pics in the new format so the showing will have to wait a bit...

Well done JD... beautiful job how did you make the small gear onboard?

Ken... you must post more pics of Tally HO... the one above and the one in build

Old Sailor and Brian... well done!

Great thread

J. Dillon,

I made up the plans as I went along. They are posted at
http://www.imagestation.com/album/pictures.html?id=2129939122

along with some construction photos. I'd be happy to give you any more details you need to build one. The design is pretty sturdy and simple, and it really sails. Its about 20 inches long and 30 inches high.

The album has a sail plan and patterns for the hull sides, midship frame, and transom. The scale on the sail plan is one graph paper square = 1 inch. The keel is a piece of heavy sheet metal from a stove pipe that was flattened, with the 4 ounces of lead cast as two ingots and glued alongside, then covered with knitted t-shirt cloth and epoxy to make it smooth. The keel fits into a slot in the bottom of the hull. The rudder is a sheet of 1/8 plywood from a wooden clementine box with a brass rod glued into into, pushed up through a hole in the hull and then bent over to form the tiller. The tiller rest is a piece of high density foam so it holds the tiller wherever it is set; you can scrounge some from a old running shoe or flipflop.

It is pretty simple. I've made one for my boys, one for their cousins, and one sold at a Leukemia Society auction.

Ken , are you implying that the cabin acts as a retrieval buoy if the boat.... er...... sinks ? ;)

Brian, Your little boat is just right as a project for my grandson and with a RC unit as Old Sailor's model maybe even better.

Old Sailor does your model have a sheet control ?

I got carried away with the model I posted. Much too ambitious. I'll be sure to build your model this fall for a Christmas gift.

Dingo, I use miniature tools to craft all the small parts like blocks and dead eyes. In fact the dead eyes are made from plugs cut with a cutter. I just drilled holes in them. Nice thing about models most of us have scrap stuff for all the parts already.;)

Yes, the cabin top is a retrieval buoy, would not be necessary if I sealed the cockpit sole and the cabin top, but that would make access to inside difficult. It does pretty good, takes usually three knockdowns before it ship too much water. Of course if I would reduce sail when I should that all wouldn't happen. But the prime purpose of the model was handling and stability tests for the bigger version.:)

Doesn't hold a candle to what you guys are building, but here's my meek offering anyway...

I was going to build a model to Brian's plan, but found these while I was trying to discern some of the details:

http://footy.rcsailing.net/

I have two hulls glued up, but got waylaid when I requested sail numbers. The class is still in its infancy. Unfortunately they don't answer emails (in the states), so I haven't got sail numbers yet. Progress slowed when I got to the sails. I have all of the pieces, just need to finish assembly, paint, etc.

They corrected the dimensions for the "Razor" since I constructed mine too. If you decide to build it, make sure you have the latest plans.

It has been a fun winter project, and I can see where they will be fun in the summer too!

Yes JDillon, the Mirror has two servos, one for the sheets and one for the rudder.

Beautiful models...all. I've been building boat models for some 47 years and finished a 1/12 scale model of a 28-foot Hackercraft for a fellow in Boston this past year. ....was a fun project.

We could really use a "Models" section on this Forum.....anyone agree?

It might be nice to have a model section but popping a few in now and then gives a little relief from all the bickering down in the bilge. I know others here at WBF build models . Maybe this thread will encourage them to show them off.

Mr. Campbell ya got any images of yours ? Do you belong to any ship modeling group or anybody else? Ken ?
