On my trip to Wilmington NC, I dropped by Cape Fear Community College to get a peek at thier boat building shop, My thanks to Ed Verge who heads the College's boat building program for giving me a tour and allowing the photographs.
The shop is right on the downtown Wilmington waterfront and packed full of student projects that spill out into the parking lot.

Some of the various projects in the shop. Ed was busy with students so I didn't take up his time asking about the specifics of each boat
This bottom of this skiff is covered with Dynel, Ed says it is very durable

I forgot the make of the boat this student is working on, it starts with an "s" and is(was) made in Canada. Restoration skills are also part of the program, and is the area of boatbuilding this student is interested in pursuing a career in.

For you Simmons fans here is a high side 20' getting restored. I have been on an 18' before but this is the first high side 20' I have gotten close to. It is a big skiff! scraping the paint should be good for 8 credit hours!

That's my old Simmons 20. The restoration seemed to be going backward the last time I saw it, but now things look a lot better.
