to have done. We had the tall ships into Mobile for our 300th anniversary in 2004 and I doubt that anyone who was there will ever forget it. They had the festival on the 4th of July and it was pretty much magic. One tip: go down early before the ship tours open. You'll probably get to talk to the crews, and you definitely get a better look.
One thing that struck me was how neat the local boats were when put up against more famous boats such as the Pride of Baltimore and the U.S.C.G. Eagle. The four or five schooners who participated from down here on the Gulf Coast carried themselves with every bit as much pride and panache, imo.
Have a wonderful time.

I personally believe that event organizers that utilize 'local' vessels are way ahead of those that don't. All ships are 'local' to somewhere, and as a participant, I greatly enjoy the spontaneous happenings when locals are included. Bloody heck, it's all good, but sort of like a 'car show' for the captains..You are really familiar with some of those with whom you routinely sail with.

Gary, our local privateer, Horatio Sinbad of the Meka II is the honary spokesperson of the event. He brought the event to Beaufort by winning a SailAmerica race while in the Bahamas (I think) a few years ago, with a crew of teenagers I might add.
Several of our local woodies will also be included in the event.
