My wife and I are going to Mystic Seaport for the Small Craft Weekend on June 3 & 4. We're looking for a small, inexpensive hotel for the weekend. Nothing fancy, within walking distance of the event would be great.

Any suggestions?

Thanks,

Are you bringing a boat with you? Tell us about her. I'm hoping to make it but haven't finalized plans yet.

Don't stay in Mystic. It is a tourist trap especially during the summer.
Stay on the RI side if you are coming from that direction.

Even Stonington would be cheaper and it is all of a 10 mile drive.
Now if ya want a chain, I suppose it does not matter but, if ya don't.
No, not Mystic.

like Jamie said nothing is cheap in Mystic. When we went last spring the cheapest was the Comfort Inn at $155 ( probaly higher this year) It is about a 1.5 mile walk to the Seaport.

There is one somewhere not too far, but too far to walk.

Aren't there berths on the Joseph Conrad at Mysic?

Damn
I just threw away the quarterly from Mystic with all of the class schedules. The students use the Conrad while they are there. If memory serves, some classes start in early June which means there probably is no bunking on the Conrad.
Interesting thought though.
Call them up.

I stayed on the Conrad with my family at the 2000 JGSCWW. Kids and I loved it, Mary said never again. There are lots of people in there and some guy near us had really bad sleep apnea. So every time he stopped breathing Mary would lie there awake thinking breath, dammit, breath! Eventually he'd start breathing again and Mary could go back to waiting for him to stop all over again. I guess that's what happens when you've been a critical care nurse as long as she has. :) The really fun part was being on museum grounds after closing time. :D

Out of curiosity, how far in advance did you have to make those reservations on the Conrad?

Several years ago, at one of the Woodenboat shows, we stayed at a chain motel just off the interstate and an easy walk to the Olde Mystic Sea Port. I don't remember the price or the name, and anyway it'd be rather more now. Handy is good and so is not needing to drive once you get there. Life is short. Your kids will only fight over the money when you're gone.

Thanks for the heads up on lodging -or lack of- at Mystic. No, I will not be bringing my boat. I just want to play with the ones there!

that) when I visited MSM a couple of years ago. I had picked up my Beetle in Mass. and dropped by New Bedford and Mystic on the way home. The Inn is right on the river and is a very easy walk to the Seaport Museum.

I had hoped to rent a Beetle and sail it on the river, but the 16 year old facist in charge told me that it was too rough. I showed him my yacht club membership card, USSA membership card, Star class card, etc. Tried to explain that I was a very experienced sailor, but he just looked down (actually he looked up about a foot ) his pimply nose and said, sorry, too dangerous. The only downer of the entire trip.

Mystic Seaport is a cool place. Enjoy the trip.

I said before, in a post to Steve Bauer, I have a house in Mystic and could put up a few folks -- four or five total. Been waiting to hear if Bauers want to crash at my place. They are first in line.
My place in in West Mystic, down river from the Seaport. It's about 1/2 mile from the museum by car or bike, and about the same by
boat. There's a public access launch ramp 1/4 mile from my house,
so it would be practical to launch a boat there and row/sail up the river to the museum.

Looks like the Bauers are not going to make it to small craft weekend in Mystic, so my wife and I do have room in our house
to berth a couple of couples. We're about one mile from the
museum, an easy walk or bike ride. Let us know pronto if
you are interested.
