Hi there James.
You sure seem like a nice fellow.
I would love to have a copy.
However, I live in Australia and believe it would not be fair for you to freight that disc to me, half way around the world. What other arrangements are possible?
This seems like a top idea, What else can we record and distribute for free amongst the woodenboat fraternity? I'll come up with something.
Who's up for a compilation music CD??
Dire Straits, Richard Clapton, Bob Marley........

Sign me up too!

But can I make a suggestion, instead of one guy making 400 copies of the video, and having no time to do anything else, perhaps the best way we can help out is for 10 or so folks who had CD/DVD burning capabilities to get the disk first, with a list of 5 or so people who they will send a copy to. We could agree on reimbursement per copy and send it to the person we get the disk from.

Just a thought...

Peer to Peer file sharing services (limewire, bearshare kazaa, etc.) would be perfect for distribution of this type of information,

Join the network, give the video file a unique name easy to search for name such as caulking 101, and anybody who wants a copy can download it.

See these things can be used for more than just illegal music copying!

George Ray
08-27-2006, 07:12 AM
What a great thing you are doing by sharing.

Seems that there must be an easy way to post the file(s) and let folks upload it(them). Perhaps someone on the forum is 'in the know' and could make it happen or suggest what needs to be done when your disk is ready. Sure would save many hours, much mailing expense and in the end would further the dissemination of the the information which is a primary goal.

Notice that there are many videos on Google-Video that are nearly two hours long and that there are also many that are multi-part for a total length of 6 - 8+ hours. There is a free extention for the Firefox browser that allows one to download a Google video very easily. Then there are some file type convienience issues but that is all easily fixable.

Spot on cshire,
Just thought I would emphasise that this is by far the best way to share this information.

It beats the hell out of somone(s) sitting there for hours burning discs, compiling mailing lists, putting in envelopes and paying for trucks and planes cart these packages across your continent and the world...

From the response that this has got, it would not surprise me if more offers and efforts like this are to follow.
Just more great sharing of information.

Get it right, and make it easy, from the beginning.
P2P- is the way to do this.

As said, name it something unique and identifiable.
post the name of the video file here, and place the file in the dedicated sharing folder for the P2P program. For the first uploads, one would probably want to advertise a certain time frame where the computer will be left online (for more than enough time for at least one other to get the whole file).
Of course somone has to be online with the program connected for others do access it, but this can be arranged from here in the forum.
After it has been shared, the responsibility is gone from the original sharer to keep allowing uploads.
the other people who already have it can take over from here.

If you guys, and forums in general get this sorted, then there is no reason why hundred and thousands of videos cannot be shared (relatively) cost free....

It might be good to work out early some general form of naming and catalogueing of the videos...

And I don't even want a Vid...
But thanks anyway.
Hans.

hansp77

My personal P2P preference-
For ease of use is limewire.
Mac and PC, and very very simple.
Although there are probably other ones that fill these needs.

Easy instructions could be explained here which would have the P2P newbies downloading within 2 minutes of installing the program.

Benjicohn,

youtube would only be ok if the entire video was divided into 5-10 minute chapters (as this is the limit for regular account holders).
This might be just a little annoying though...
somehow I imagine that this video, and others like it would be a lot longer.
The advantage of P2P is that it is a much faster download than normal web based stuff.
You can also easily stop and start your downloads.

For big files like video, especially dvd or home digicam quality,
I repeat,
P2P is the best way.
