A friend of a friend is on Everest. He and a buddy are climbing from the Chinese side. They are not part of a group, they are doing it just the two of them. No Sherpas. One summited this morning, the other almost. Nice going.
Lots of info at Everest News:

The air is thinner up here too.
causes liberalism and other crazy activities.

Congrats to those guys. Mountaineering books are my favorite pleasure pastime. It's a big deal.

Not to belittle their achievement, but isn't the TIBETAN side a much easier climb?

"easier"
Not certain that word fits, even used relatively.

How about trying it and getting back to us. If you survive.

Fatality rate on Everest climbs have run about 1 in 10 historically, not to mention disabilities related to edema, frostbite, injury, etc.

We do it because it's there.....(George Mallory, whose body was found in 1999)

Just a point of note.
A Kiwi double amputee summited Everist earlier this week.

Some 10 years or more back he lost both lower legs to frost bite climbing in NZ. After that be first got into Cycling and then he started to develop artificial legs to go climbing again. Last year he had a go at our highest peak and this year Everist.. The question for Him I guess is what's next.
