Maybe I'm missing something in the instructions, but I haven't found it yet in the instructions or Leather's book.

How do you attach the gaff sail at the throat? Is it considered part of the luff of the sail and attached to the mainmast via your lacing? Or is it part of the head and attached to the gqff?

Okay I figured out what I'm going to do. I will attach an eye to the bottom of the gaff jaws and start my luff lacing there.

Before fixing that eye, you might contemplate the changing geometry around the throat as the gaff transitions from horizontal to peaked up.
One of the ways it's done is to have a flat bar pass down through the gaff jaws, throat halyard shackled above, throat of sail attached below, and gaff and jaws free to pivot on a post passed through the middle of the bar. There are [IIRC] pictures in Leather.

IVY has a metal plated that is attached to the throat halyard on the top. It is morticed through her gaff, and shackled at the bottom to the throat of the main.

I'll look back through Leather's book. BTW I've already added an eye for this. And also I've got rake problems I have to fix before I attack this again.

I just read these related links. What is Leather? Do you know where I can get a schematic of a gaff rig and how to rig it? I am making a transition from a Marconi rig.:o

My gaff has a slider crosspinned to the jaws, with the halyard for the main attached to it:

"Leather" is John Leather, the author of the book "Gaff Rig" which is the best available book on gaff rigs and what goes into them. You can probably still buy a copy from The WoodenBoat Store. Worth having.
