What would be the best wood to use for spreaders? Gaff rigged schooner. Web site for pictures (http://www.aylard.ca)

Unless you've become fanatical about weight aloft, i'd recommend douglas fir.

Douglas fir would work but I believe white oak is proper.

A caveat please. If the spreaders are to be painted white, white oak is proper. If vahnished, use good mahagony.

Normaly the wood of choice on the West Coast is Ash.

All of the woods mentioned above are ok. White oak and ash are the strongest, spruce is the lightlest. Some like to paint the upper surfaces of varnished spreaders with white or aluminum paint which protects from sun.

I'd use black locust but that's just because I have a bunch. :)

White Oak it is. Painted white on top, varnished on the bottom.
Thanks for the advise.
