Well close enough. I just need to get 2 more carriage bolts to mount the last remaining cleat and than the final paint job and we will hit the water. But I have drill next weekend so it may yet be a couple of weeks.:(

I worked until late last night but the weekender is done.

No photos yet, it was too dark last night to get a good one.

There's no such thing as "finished". There's only "complete enough to launch for the first time". Before you get home, you'll have a list of projects needed to complete the boat. I GAY-RON-TEE!:D

John you are correct, she is done enough to launch with a laundry list of other stuff to be done.

Not sure when but I'm pretty sure where. I will go up to Chester Frost Park and launch from there (about 5 minutes from the house, probably 30 minutes from house to middle of lake). I would go this weekend but I have drill. I may slip out one afternoon and splash her.

For those that may have forgotten;) it is a Weekender and I've spent a lifetime:rolleyes: building her.

Hey Bell, the wife and I were talking last night and it looks like Saturday the 17 we will be camping out at Chester Frost Park. We will probably get to the lake sometimes Saturday evening and get her wet.

Looking good Chad. Congratulations.

By the way, John Bell is right. It'll never be finished. I'm still working on mine and this is her fourth year since launch. ;)

Yeah Dave I reckon I will never be "finished" but right now we call it close enough.;)

hihi...finished...hihi...

I am still laughing...

Yeah laugh all you want, those with classic wooden boats with miles of brightwork.;)

Dave let me ask you about the kick up rudder. I did the line hold up thing they have on the plans but I felt it wasn't secure enough to hold the rudder up when going down the road. So with the rudder in the up position I drilled a hole through the rudder box and the rudder which allows me to put a through bolt through it. This holds the rudder up and out of the way for trailering.

Whatcha think?

Chad, I don't leave the rudder in the rudder box when I'm hauling the boat. I drilled and counterbored the rudder box cheeks for some bronze bushing with a shoulder. I also put a bronze bushing without should in the rudder. I use a short clevis pin and clip as the pivot pin for the rudder.

The rudder is weighted with lead. Rather than melting lead and pouring it into a cavity in the rudder, I used decoy weights which are sold in strips about 7" long by an inch wide. I routed a shallow recess on each side of the rudder leaving a web of wood between. I saturated that web with epoxy, laid in the weights and added more epoxy.

As far as holding the rudder up when launching, beaching or recovering the boat, like you I drilled a hole through the cheeks and rudder for a pin. I used to use a bolt but didn't like the threads grinding at the wood every time I removed ot inserted the pin. I made a pin from a piece of brass rod and a wooden knob which I epoxied in place. The pin slides in easier and it is easier to get hold of when hanging over the transom.

More info than you asked for but there it is. ;)

I didn't weight my rudder. I feel like the line and cleat will hold it down fairly well. I was real worried about it holding it up though. I looked for a clevis pin, but couldn't find one long enough, so I just got a through bolt. I could take and grind the threads off where it would be in contact with the rudder.

I was concerned about having the rudder sticking out that far when going down the road. It isn't easily visible if you're looking at it end on and I didn't want to have some clown following too close run into it. Besides, I figured all that weight bouncing around about four feet from where the box mounts to the boat wouldn't do anything good to the mountings.

Can't put my trailer on the truck with the rudder down.

I worried about the rudder sticking out also, but said what the heck. If I have to I will put a red flag on it.;)

What is that motor thing? Real sailors don't need motors. ;) Or in my case can't afford one yet.;) :D

Congratulations Chad.:D Looks great. As far as "finished " goes that just doesn't happen. You'll want to "tweek" it in endless challenging ways, to make her more comfortable, better sailing ability , improving her looks. The list is endless.
I launched "Carrianne" 11 years ago and I'm still making improvements as she teaches me just what she wants to make her a better boat , for me at least.

That motor thing keeps the fisherman who are always in a hurry to either get their boat into the water or out of it from getting mad at me. I no longer have to sail in to the dock. This also makes it easier for me to move out into the lake and set the sails while facing into the wind.

That's Father's Day weekend. Too bad, Chad, I've already got plans. You should plan on coming down sometime, though. Scott Widmier and Keith McLean were seen messing around out of my marina with Keith's Vacationer the other day. I'll bet we could roust them out again...

I have come across one thing already I need to do. While constructing I didn't put in a drain plug. Thanks to my handy shop vac I was able to drain her out after her bath, but I need to go ahead and do a drain plug.
