I managed to crawl downriver a couple of days ago and popped into Kevin Wambach's boatshop (Lahave Marine Woodworking) before heading over to Scott's shop (Dagley's Boatworks).

Kevin is building a sweet nine-plank lapstrake dinghy, a Pete Culler design. Her backbone & transom are in the stocks and planking is underway. The photo shows her building molds in place, with the third plank temporarily in place for final fitting. The backbone is all mahogany, the garboard is okume ply (because of the extreme twist in the plank and its thinness, it is prone to splitting; Kevin has found that the ply garboard is a good solution). Seats, caprail and triim will all be mahogany and floorboards will be oiled teak. The exterior is painted white with client's choice of colour on the sheerstrake, and the interior is usually finished bright with oil and varnish.

Over at Scott's shop in Petite Riviere, he's got a couple of projects on the go. The prototype of the NorseBoat 17.5 plywood kit boat is fully planked up and primed and sitting on its trailer waiting for the interior and deck to be fitted. The orange boat in the forground is a 40-ft. twenty-person Dragonboat.

This shot shows the ply bulkheads in place, with their integral seat supports.

This is a shot of the interior of the Dragonboat, showing the centreline girder that is the primary longitudinal strength member of the hull. The little blocks held on by tape are the seat risers being held in place until the epoxy cures.

Wow. I've never had a thread sink so fast. Nobody interested in boatbuilding any more?

That Norseboat is a pretty little boat. Who is the kit available from?

Thanks for the photos.

Sorry Michael,I always check out your posts.

I'm building a red cedar 8 plank 12' dingy with the help of a local oldtimer. The backbone is assembled and the plank are all shaped,I'll be planking up on tuesday.I do like the idea of a ply garboard though, how are the edges sealed?

Thanks Michael. :) Will that Norseboat be in the water at the Mahone Bay Show?

Michael,

What are your thoughts of the Norseboat? I've observed one in two outings or races and have been underwhelmed. It seems underpowered in light wind and the hull seems unable to take more sail in higher wind. I asked why the foresail was not used for beating and was told that it was only useful off the wind. Its kind of cute but is that the secret to being a marketing success?

I don't have anything against the boat or its builders but just don't understand the apparent interest in it. Maybe I'm missing something.

Information about the NorseBoat 17.5, both plywood kit and ready-to-go fiberglass model, is available at www.norseboat.com

Steven, the plan is to have the ply boat version in the water at Mahone Bay. Other friends are planning to have the restored Dragon class sailboat and Stambaugh Redwing that I posted pictures of a while back there as well.

Tom, I have not had chance to sail one of the NorseBoats yet, so really can't comment. Also, as I am under contract to NorseBoats to develop the kit version of the boat, and possibly two future boats for the company, I don't feel it is proper of me to comment on their marketing strategies. The original boat was designed by Chuck Paine, who seems to know a thing or two about small craft.

How long is that Culler dingy Michael? I want to see if it is Burke's tome of Pete's stuff.

copaco - I can't find the photos either. They must have died with the change-over to the new format. The boat is launched now, and looking good.

"Kevin is building a sweet nine-plank lapstrake dinghy, a Pete Culler design."

I think he's referring to the first picture posted.

Whoops!... my bad. I thought that Harry was referring to the lap-ply boat by the dragon boat in Scott's shop. Sorry for the misunderstanding.

The boat under construction in Kevin's shop is a "Wherry Yawl" by Culler and is 10' - 6" LOA, beam 4' - 6", and carries a sprit sail of 47 sq. ft. (from Kevin's website, www3.ns.sympatico.ca/lahavemarine ). I regret that I don't know the design number.
