Well mates after so many years looking and searching buying plans and such Im done

Ive found her

Was directed to an Aussie designers site (FIRST BLOODY TIME EVER!) and while having a bit of a gander around found her

My heart beat faster... my eyes boggled... my mouth went dry and I just couldnt stop looking... the only other boat design thats done that to me was Susan the Coaster Schooners Fame... but this is different this is IT!!!

Her name be Paketi
Her designer be David Payne
Her basic measurements be 7.20m by 2.54m

Similar to Farne Islander (6.09m by 2.31m) of Iain Oughtreds (ala Norm Messingers Prairie Islander) but sooooooooooooooooo stunning

here is a pic from Davids site

Whaaaaaaaaaaaaahhhhhoooooooo!! Im finally done!

I'm not too keen on the doghouse version

This is a nice one with the topsail

Edited to add, I'd put a deeper rudder.

That's a sweet looking boat. I'm thinking mullety.
The decidedly less attractive doghouse version may indicate that headroom is an issue.

Wild Dingo

yeah agreed the doghouse version seriously sucks but then it was never an intention that Id build any boat with a doghouse... I kinda like her the way she is in the pic the rudder yes needs a bit more depth Im thinking but till I get the plans in hand I will hope theres several versions... the topsail looks cool eh?

I was going to get onto Mike Feild about his Sanderling but seeing this I wont bother ;) sorry mate

link? no worries...

http://www.payneyachts.com

I'll be buggared Tom I hadnt noticed that in the store... then again Id been avoiding looking so maybe it was just me ming doin some serious ignoring... $175US??? whats that in AUD? better than 330AUD ? nah buggar it wont go that route at least this way I can get straight onto the designer no worries!

HELL!! Id save a hundred $ AUD by getting it from Woodenboat store!

So much for buyin local and supporting the local

Good choice . very good choice Dingo. Rob sails it well and as far as I can tell its quick for its length. Pretty sure he doesn't have a motor.
Its certainly manouvreable. We nearly ran it down one mahurangi regatta a few years ago.

incidentally ,over the last couple of months,I've seen a couple of rig designs David Payne has done for the 2 big logans under restoration here .( Rainbow and Rawhiti.)

Shane, it's likely David Payne has more current plans than those offered at the WBS. You might want to check before buying. And if you get them from David, you get to ask questions from the designer...

Bloody hell, Shane. I told you about Paketi over three flaming years ago. When we started marketing David's plans. :) So don't go buying anything till we've talked again.

Here's a bilge keel version --

.

Dingo? Drongo more like. :D

Edited to add: Sanderling wouldn't have been any good to you, mate. You wouldn't want to sail her across the Bight, and road transport would be horrendous.

Dingo,
Congratulations! It's quite satisfying when you know. I've been looking since 1989, seriously for the last ten years. I found mine two months ago. God speed and fair winds!

When the mind's wanderings find a steady wind to fill er' sails, all else falls behind ! Nice choice !

"I'm done lookin"

See how it progresses- from little white fibs, to bold fabrications to DOWNRIGHT LIES!:D

Fella down here built one of David's Snapper Boats, I saw it last wooden boat show. Different concept, less yotty, more workboat, but very practical I thought. I don't think you'll go far wrong with one of his designs.

aahh now that hurts!! :(

I was thinkin of Cinema but got very distracted by Paketi... I do like Cinema a hell of a lot... but Paketi sigh shes a bloody beauty eh?

She's pretty, alright. I remember looking at Paketa myself a few years ago. But Shane mate, you sure you're gonna be happy with a single hard chine plywood hull? Not that I have anything against them and they're easy and quick to build but not much of a transom to look at.

Wild Dingo
06-19-2006, 09:28 AM
aahh see now someone lookin into me mind!! Good on you Jim mate... yes that was the first thing that crossed my mind other than "damn she looks friggin gorgeous" and "she kinda reminds me of Norms boat Prairie" that being the reason I never went for Iains Farne Islander design as Norm did

Anyway I sent an email to David and his response was as follows

Shane,

it displaces about 1400kgs, so the overall weight of the boat less some gear etc is more like 1250kgs approx.
It probably could be planked up in a traditional manner even with the chine, we would just need to figure out the arrangement of the planking ends at the chine to ensure that no plank ends were left with end grain exposed, in other words some sort of "rabbet" or closing off plank is needed at the chine.
It might weigh a little more too, the ply plus laminate panels would need to be replaced with planking, a bit thicker than the ply, plus the frames would need to be changed in section dimensions. But if say 1400kgs of boat, plus a trailer as well, is towable with your vehicles and experience then it is not really an issue.
Price for plans is as quoted, $330.00.
let me know what you think.
cheers
David.

So although he doesnt exactly say "I will redraw it so you can" he does say "we would just need to figure out..." so I think he would be quite ameniable to doing it so I get it right well thats what I get from the email anyways

As for the transom... well mate Im not all that big on big buxom transoms sorta the opposite actually ;)

Im definantly going to have a go at this one

Unless

JohnB?? howd we go with those plans for Waione mate? :D

Shane, I too wondered if you didn't really want more boat since you had been considering "Susan". I too love the size and overall parameters of a boat such as "Susan" but will end up building a maxi-trailerable design like Herreshoff's Alerion or "Pleasure". I also really like Canoeyawl's version of Strange's "Wenda" and that boat really sails well.

I thinkyour choice is a really great looking design just wondered if you didn't want a little more boat. Love the sail plan and I have some decent photos of her in a folder somewhere that show off her great looks.

Extremely big bump.
I found this thread while searching for photos of Susan.
Wild Dingo, did you ever get David Payne's Paketi plans.
Does anyone know of any photos of a Paketi other than those on David Payne's website?

eeerrrr ummm :o

Actually...

I...

ummm...

well its like this...

I ummm got sorta...

mmm distracted? :o

See it was about then that I got talking to David {Meer} about the Golant Gaffer plans he had and that got me started looking around again at more shall we say traditional boats of a bit longer length than either the GG or Paketi... and well... I mmm sorta got side tracked hadnt thought about her since this thred :o

What can I say?

But talking with my FIL yesty at the bday barbie hes 9/10th convinced me to keep the size down to at least trailerable size so Im back to square one again ;) I actually am starting to think that a smaller boat would give not only me but also the hoons far more fuyn and ready enjoyment than a larger design would... but there are things happening that as yet Im not prepared to state in pubic since every time Ive done that {example a this thread} as soon as I do somewthing happens and I start wandering and lusting all over again so for now its all hush hush... "secret dingo business" ;) ;)

I know where you are coming from Dingo.

Not meaning to embarrass only curious.

I think the problem of fitting all of your desires into one package (I'm talking boats here) is almost insurmountable. You only have to follow some of the threads here to see that.

A boat that is trailerable opens up a lot more waterways for exploration.

I like Paketi, and I'd like to see more photos of her.

Here's a double chine Simplicity 24 from Selway Fisher. Also available with three chines. Several keel variations. Not too keen on this all white example but lots of potential:

A cold molded strip planks inner and diagonal thin strips with plastic staples, would make building realitively fast. That site building susan had some great posts for :) building techniques. Looks good.

Build a pathfinder or a navigator, learn about sailing, then go up to a moored boat if thats what you want.

Rufus, I haven't got many pics. Actually I haven't come across paketi for while.
have a look at these though. she's on the right, forcing Iorangi to tack, who forces us( out of sight behind Jonqil ) , who....:D

Four wheels, 24ft... Is a boat that can only be trailed with a 4x4 or a small truck truly trailerable?

I'd be curious to see the stability curve on an unballasted hull such as the above skipjack. At what angle of heel does the boat go over and stay over?
