Excuse me for the ignorance, I am posting this ? for a nephew in Spain. This yard has been doing nothing but glass, aluminum and steel hull refurbs for years. Mainly repainting anti fouling and the occasional refurb.
This winter he has a job to haul a carvel planked boat and needs to know the best way to clean the seams and repaint. He was proposing to fill seams with epoxy and fair the hull, but I know this is wrong.
What is the correct procedure for the seams ? I'm assuming that carvel hulls are never perfectly fair and the seams will always be visible to some degree. I thought the seams were reefed and filled with oakum and then a seam compound applied - whatever that is.
Any help will be appreciated, please ignore my ignorance of carvel plank construction.
