I built Phil Bolger’s Monhegan 18’ LOD design. Last seen in Urbana on the Rappahannock River in Virginia. The boat I built was launched in 1976. Strip planked and epoxy/dynel covered, tongue and groove fir decks. The rudder was made from white oak salvaged from a warehouse in Richmond that dated to the Confederacy. The tiller was carved white oak with a fiddle head. I’d be interested to know if anyone has information on what happened to her.

An interesting design which I have only seen in line drawings. What was she like to sail?

She sailed like a witch! 275 square feet of sail in a low, powerful gaff rig. One day a hobie cat who was sailing Fleets Bay with us passed and shouted, "that old gaffer sure is fast!" Old, at the time, she wasn't. Another time I followed a forty foot sloop out of Fleet's Bay into the Chesapeake. My mother asked when I intended to turn around, and I replied that I'd come about as soon as I saw the look on the face of the guy at the helm of the forty-footer when he turned around. The look of amazed surprise when he finally turned around and saw us still on his transom was worth it.

By the way, how can I post a photo(s) of her?
