I know it's not a wood boat...

Anyone ever sail a Herreshoff America (18' catboat) ?

Interested to hear feedback on the boat.

Thanks
Pete

Interested to see the responses too... there is a guy in my marina with one who goes out all the time... looks real salty... makes me jealous every time.

Do you know which Herreshoff designed it?

Halsey, NGH's grandson and Sidney's son.

Although it has lots of wood on it, enough to salve the cravings of a moderate wood junkie, it is a fiberglass hull and topsides. They had one bad feature and that was that on the originals the outboard motor was housed in a internal box that was so air tight that the motor could starve for lack of air.

And although they are no longer made, Compac Yachts has bought the molds, updated them somewhat and now builds the "Horizon Cat".

Pete,

Back in the 70's I sailed on a friends America out of Norwalk. He had the same problem with the outboard in the well. I helped him install a bracket on the transom and closed up the well. It made a fine cooler!

The boat it self was fairly well made and able enough, though a Marshall Sanderling could sail rings around it. My former wife and I made several cruises in the America and she proved comfortable if snug for two.

If I had to go for a frozen snot cat boat I would choose a Marshall Sanderling heads and shoulders above an America. Thankfully I don't have to make such choices ;)

All,

I shoulda coulda woulda bought an 18' Fenwick Williams in mint condition a few years ago.

But I did not.

I think I'll pass on this one. I really don't have the $$ to spend and at least on paper I prefer the Marshall.

Thanks
Pete
