I spent Tues-Thurs sailing on Moosehead Lake in Maine. This is a magical spot, lots of water surrounded by trees and the occasional camp, ringed by mountains, including Mount Kineo which juts right out into the lake. There are primitive campsites around the edge of the lake available on a first come first served basis. My first night was spent at a campsite in Doughnut Cove, and the second night at the base of Mount Kineo at Hardscrabble Point. Yesterday I sailed hard in quite a bit of wind from 7:30 AM to 5:30 PM to get back to Beaver Cove Marina where I launched and was extremely well treated. The manager of the yard, Bill Fletcher, was as nice as can be. The crew helped me step my 27' mast and helped get my boat into the water. I just tried to upload a picture of my boat at rest in Doughnut Cove, but was told that it was too big. Shoot!
My boat is a 1948 Rhodes 18 centerboard sloop that I got last year in a state of neglect. This spring I gave her a new transom and next year I'll start replacing frames. But man, she handled well! Yesterday was spent all day in a 2' chop with an occasional 3' and a couple that were 4' and this boat took them all in stride.
The picture that I wanted to post rivals the current cover of WoodenBoat, I'm a happy Sail/Camper.
