I'm going to be hauling out soon. It's time to stock up on sandpaper. Anyone know of a good source for 6 inch / 6 hole hook & loop sanding disks?

I've been using these guys (Klingspor's) for more than a decade for all my sanding stuff, best I've found; and as a pro, I use a lot of sanding stuff.

I while back someone posted this outfit on the forum, I've ordered from them, good prices and delivery.

They have a 46 page catalog of mostly abrasives so they have about the best selection anywhere.

I have to agree with Fixmyboat. I have used the paper from Klingspor and LOTS of Mirka over the years, always conscious of getting a good price. Then , one day, when working for someone else, a salesman came in and left samples of 5" 5 hole Norton disks for a ro sander I used. Well, the norton disks kicked butt, lasting easily 2 to 3 times longer than any other paper I have used, while sanding faster, period. Since then I ignore the price and buy only norton for all my hand held sanders.

I recall having a similar opinion about Norton. When I first got out of high school, I worked in an auto body repair shop. The guy who ordered supplies was given a sample of Norton. We all loved the stuff. It outlasted whatever it was we had been using. The difference in cost was made up for by how little of it we were using, and it proved to be cheaper. Well, the owner didn't see it that way, and we went back to the old stuff.
I've been using Mirka. I think I'll give Norton a try. I just ordered several boxes from Jamestown Distributors. I hope it's worth the difference in price...

Give us a report , if it's save's $ long term I'd change. What was the per 100/ box $ from Jamestown ?
Thanks , Paul

What style of Norton paper are we talking about? A manufacturer might have many.
I have some 6"xNH 80-grit 'No-fil Adalox' discs which are a great disappointment.

I bought the following:
Norton A290 Dustless Sanding Discs with Hook & Loop attachment. 6 inch x 6 hole Adalox Aluminum Oxide abrasive material. Heavy duty backing, open coat, and Hook & Loop backing for repeated use. 50 Disks per Pack; 6 x 6 holes.
The prices vary per grit. For a 50 count box of 80 grit, the price is $23.72.
I've still got some Mirka left, I'll do a side by side comparison in about 2 weeks, and let you know what I found.

We have Klingspor at the shop (we have another name for it) and can't hide it in the other shop fast enough! It doesn't last even 1/2 as long as 3M! We keep telling the boss to not buy any more; 3M may cost a bit more but the savings inn the time it actually stays on the sander is worth it! :)
Klingspor, blech!

The Norton 3X is the good stuff. It's about twice as expensive as the regular Norton. But sands twice as fast and lasts 3 times as long. Or so they say. :)

The Norton a290 is the stuff i was unhappy with. The Mirka gold discs are much better.

Jake,
I'm surprised to hear the dissatisfaction with Klingspor. They offer several different weights, are you using the reddish E-weight Aluminum Oxide or the tan light-weight stuff? I was using Mirka before and find the Klingspor to last much longer...can't wear a disk out. Different oars for different longboats I suppose.....

It is the tan colored stuff. Maybe if the boss bought the other we might change our minds. ;) You know how bosses are. :)

Jake,
That tan stuff is crap....it's their lightweight product line. I can understand your dis-satisfaction. I bought some once just to see what it was like, and as long as it lasts (not!) on a RO sander, I've relegated the rest of that batch to hand sanding with a foam/velcro hand block just to use it up--ain't worth the time to stick it to the RO. The E-weight red stuff is world's apart, I simply can't wear a disk out. Ones that lose their edge on the sander get used for hand sanding, and last forever. I should qualify my endorsement by saying I use mostly 80 and 120, and 180 to 220 disks less so. Anything above that I hand sand (or don't sand). Tell your boss to pull out his wallet and try the REAL stuff--hahaha!

Mike, your description would make sense. It does seem to do well in hand application but not in the RO. :) Presently we are using mostly60 and 80, but still a lot of 36. Hopefully in a while we will get into the paper that won't take your hide off, don't ask how I know that! :) LOL Let's just say that an 8" disk sander (36 grit) that catches and comes out of your hand will leave a very nice scar on your leg.
