Well it has been a busy summer, we are getting ready to head up to Maine to get married and another course at the WBS. We will be taking the Lightning with us to sail around while we are there. We are also planning on Christening it while in Maine. Here is a picture of the Lighning with its name and the lady it is named for (her middle name). The Lightning has been fun to sail, it is a very fast boat and we have had a few problems controlling her (being rookie sailors). We have flown the chute once and actually got it up on the first try. The only problems I have had (other then scrapes with the dock) is the tiller and rudder. The plywood blade of the rudder slips into a mahogany head and I have been fighting cracks in the head. I plan on making a new one-piece rudder at the WBS while there.

We are getting married on a Schooner and will stay the first week in Boothbay. The second week we will be at the WBS.

Congratulations.

May the good times continue to roll for you and Elaine.

And may you push many happy miles of water under the Lightning's keel.

I'm a little coonfused here - 15 hundreds, on a Lightning, isn't this the "WoodenBoat Forum" and not the International Lightning Class Forum ? ? ?

or am I just bias with my Lightning 7310 Woody ? ?

MrBimp,

Your not confused, it is a newly built wooden Lightning #15097. I purchased the plans from the ILCA and was assigned the hull number at that time. Search through this forum and you will see my construction posts.

Mr. Blimp:
Is your #7310 a Nickels and Holman? I have N&H #7313 stored back in Michigan awaiting restoration when I return. Unfortunately it's in sort of sad shape and will take a lot of work.

Craig - Yes my 7310 is a N&H - class supplied info said it was built for Jim Stock of MI, next owned by a Thomas Magrow also MI before going to NY where it was owned by a Micheal Meridith and then a Charles Matterson. Matterson passed away and his son sold it to Seth Herrick who sold it to me. If my wife were telling it she would say he unloaded it on me. It was in sad shape when I picked it up - checks right through the hull, paint and varnish in bad shape, termites ate the top of the stem post and the mast step and some of the keelson. The mast had started to delaminate and had become the home to a major ant colony. Luckily all the standing rigging and the trailer was in excellent shape. I've been working on it just over a year now. Hoping to launch next season.

Carl - My apologies on the plastic look comments - the rub rail really threw me as it looked like a plastic tube. I'll be looking for your construction posts.

I guess I just sort of equated the high number with all the fiberglass ones my associates have.

OK - when Carl first posted his response to me about the wood quality of his boat I felt like half an ass. Now that I just finished reading through all of Carl's postings - I only feel like both halves of an ass.

Carl- I'll look for ELAINE sailing in Boothbay Harbor. Hope the weather will be better whenever you arrive. It's been a lot of fog lately.
