View Full Version : Photos...my visit to Mystic

My recent first trip to New England also included Mystic Seaport. I spent the day there until the sun was gone...and enjoyed it quite a bit. Here are some of my photos. FYI, images taken with Nikon D200 digital SLR and either the 12-24 lens or the 18-200mm VR lens.

Some good shots there showing how hand painting boats names adds to their appeal and character. The staff there picks such good color schemes (schema, Hwyl??) and maintains the fleet so well. That Whitehall interior is one of the best 'non-paint' interiors I recall seeing.

That last shot of the BRECK MARSHALL (catboat) with her sail raised at the dock looks surreally distorted. I like it and assume it was taken with the 12-24 lens(?). A modern version of the old photos of charter party cats with sails raised for advertising or drying out in Nantucket and Edgartown.

It also looks like a few of those pictures were taken very early in the morning. How did you get into Mystic at that hour? Were the pictures taken from outside at a distance? Or was it a photographer's technique that did it?

Thanks!

Thanks for the comments...I stayed late until just after sunset... I just kept shooting and no one told me to leave. I was there at the end of day... because I was waiting for Araminta to return from charter...so I could see her. I took photos from a boat and then from the shore with my 18-200, as the sun went down. There were a few folks around that had tied up their boats for a visit.

I plan on supplying most of my images to Mystic...they were very courteous and helpful in trying to let visitors see all they wanted to.

In many ways, I'm looking forward to the WBS at Mystic nexy summer.
Good photos. Brings back a lot of memories especially as I have not been there since 1989.

ps. Any thoughts or observations regarding the bookstore now that it is under new management?

The two stores I saw there didn't have all that many books, but I was preoccupied with boats. Perhaps I missed the book store.

Was just curious. There was a big "todo" on the forum last spring regarding the change in management. Was curious to see what changes had occurred.

Wonderful.

The bookstore used to be marvelous.

You didn't try to rent a Beetle Cat did you? I wonder if that fascist kid is still in charge of the boat rentals. Here I was with a Beetle attached to the back of my van in the parking lot, a 15 knot breeze blowing and this kid is telling me that he can't rent me a boat because it's too windy! Ruined my whole day. He's probably a tax lawyer or something like that by now. The ingrate.

I need to go back to Mystic. Isn't it rumored that the WoodenBoat Show will be there next year?

Yup...At Mystic at the end of June. Confirmed through Scot!
I only know this as I sense the only way to find a place to park Uncas without staying in Noank or near Mason's Island is to be an ehibit. Will see if Uncas is worthy of being there along with so many primo boats!

you guys this year. Mystic is cool and all that but it's really small and as has been mentioned it's pretty crowded even when it's just a regular weekend. And you won't get to sail 12's.

I have Dragons in June (about the third week) and something in Finns up there at some point. It would be tough for me to be there, but if I could tie it into my Finn trip it might be doable. I can already see that the schedule is going to be tough next year (I also have Finns and Dragons in March. Why can't we spread this stuff out to suit my schedule :)?).

Rob: If you did not get upstairs in the Gift shop then you missed the supply of Marine books. If you look under the Current Magazine stand there are several boxes of earlier (back to #20) Wooden Boat Mags. I stopped on the way to Newport , just to hit the gift shop. Bought Chapelle's "Boatbuilding" among several others.. Lots of titles.

Was the birth of my "wooden boat love" when I first visited 30-some years ago. 10 years ago I worked at the Millstone nukes for 9 months and had a bachelor pad in Mystic. Spent many a day in the bookstore.

And here I sit in Dallas (Arlington), working and counting down the days until I'm home on my boat in Florida.

I'm jealous! Wonderful pics. Sneak back in and take some more! :D

Rod, it's Imagestation not WBF. With Imagestation you can't link to the original image, only the reduced size image. Other image hosting services don't do this. Which did Joe switch to recently for those Dove pics? Photobucket?
Anyway, thanks for the great pics.

The Whitehall is my favorite followed closely by the boat named "George". My lady friend Barbara and I are travelling to Mystic Seaport (flying out of Austin, TX to Providence, RI) on 9/24 for a couple of days at the Seaport followed by 6 days up through New Hampshire and circling down to the Maine coast returning from Bangor, Maine on 10/2. Thanks for all the comments...I'm glad you all enjoy the images.

Can anyone suggest an image hosting service that allows the images to be posted as originally placed? I will switch to a new one IF...they don't try to charge you a bunch of bucks after you have posted lots of images (Imagestation charged me $20/yr to keep all my images there) and if they keep the images as large as I want them... I have tried a couple and they did the same thing??? I just stayed with imagestation because I already had so many images posted with them.

Additions to the thread...Very very nice. I must admit to not necessarily being interested in all that was at the museum...so I shot mostly based on personal interests. I probably shot 50 shots of Araminta alone because I was so enamoured with her...Your shots are great additions to this post and will give those viewing a better feel for what is there...my shots are a narrow view of all that is there.

I really like the black and white versions, I have always loved black and white photography, you selected a few nice shots for a B&W presentation.

I'll add a few more general shots:

Lovely photos!

Why not use the space available from your ISP? Costs less than paying various hosting services, and you won't have the issues with the images disappearing from this forum and other links when you cancel the imagestation account.

Even better is to purchase a domain name, then your images will be visible no matter who your ISP is or will be in the future.

All you need is a simple FTP software program to upload the images to your ISP-provided webspace. Ask them how much it would be to increase the storage space when you get your account password info.

John B
09-13-2006, 04:50 PM
Rod, a comment about the imaze size.
Yes its lovely to see the physically larger images but the file sizes grow too. You could have 1 mb in 2 photos sitting there and that really begins to exclude everyone on dialup or 'slow' broadband.
I always compress mine to an high email quality and then put them on imagestation. That makes for fast uploads as well.
Yes, I'd like to see them physically bigger than the default view that they allow , but the kind of sequenced up photo intensive threads I tend to run would mean much to big a thread in file size terms.
Anyway.. something to be aware of ( in case you weren't)
Beautiful shots as always.:D

Great Pics RodB thanks.

Trull, I was at Mystic in 2005 and although I didn't see a display of Pete Culler's tools, I did experience something else that just blew me away. The museum holds almost all of his plans and sell copies for incredibly low prices. I was curious about one of Cullers sharpie designs and asked to have a look at the plans. The nice lady said sure, no problem and went into the back for a while. When she returned she was carring a roll of ORIGINAL plans - the actual palns drawn by Capt'n Pete himself, not copies. I spend a half hour with them, trying not to drool. It was very cool to see his original margin notes and casual doodles here and there. Of course, I asked for a set. She went away again and came back with copies taken direct from the originals. I also bought plans for the crosby cat TRIO (sort of like a Beetle), the 14-ft sharpie ketch from the livery, and the seaford skiff. I sailed 6 different small boats including the sharpie, the woods hole boat Sandy Ford (pictured above in Getnoutside's last picture) and this little sweetie, my personal favourite, the seaford skiff Helen Packer

Getnoutside - As I said above, I sailed the Sandy Ford in Aug 05, along with a few of the others. The Woods Hole boat was a fine little sailor. She's heavily built and feels like a much bigger boat - stiffer than you'd expect. Quite comfortable for three or four poeple as long as nobody has really long legs. She pointed well in the moderate breeze I had, considering she had the baggy cotton sail shown above, and went like mad off the wind, although acceleration isn't her strong point. I liked her second to the Seaford skiff, even though they were completely different experiences.

If you go to the Woods Hole Historical Collection you'll see that the spritsail isn't very wide at all. The barn has quite a few other local boats as well - focus is on classes active in WH.

The Seaport of course has a zillion pictures in its collections, but as an oldetime picture editor, I say that yours are exceptional -- way better than lots of stuff I have seen at the museum and in its publications.
If you haven't already done so, I urge you to show your pix to the museum. Talk to either Sharon Brown, who runs the small boat shop, or Peter Vermilyea, small craft curator, and ask them to whom you might send a disk.
Again, this is really good work, and I'd hate for the museum not to
know that you have these.

Carlsboat,

I recently did supply Sharon Brown with a CD of all of my images with high and low res versions. I told them to use them with my blessings for whatever may help the museum.

I also did the same thing with the images I took of the Herreshoff Rendezvous 2006.

I wasn't "working" at the time and both these fine institutions were very hospitable and gave me great access as a passionate boat lover. They both made my visit a homerun.

Mostly I was taking photos oriented towards my personal interests in classic boats, but I had a great time and learned a lot.
