I am but it could have been worse. Horn Timber okay, ribs okay, everything else okay.
Hell, Uncas turns 60 next year! I'll need a little transom work when I reach that age. Any it will probably be about as expensive.

Now isn't this a worth a bit of love, tender care, etc. So what is the value of a stern post vs. the entire boat?

If you are asking me how much the job would cost, it really is not my kind of work. I could only give you a wild guess and it has been fully demonstrated how bad I am at giving estimates even on those typces of boat with which I am familiar. However, I would bet that a 10k bill would not overstate things.

Your boat is beautiful and I am sure you have a responsibility toward her. I am still steaming about the sh!thead that let a NY32 that I was connected to once upon a time be cut up.

Best of luck.

No, I guess I wasn't really asking but you are not that far off.
Anyone who attempts to maintain a wooden boat over a certain age has to take into account work that goes into restoring such a vessel. I can only say that as far as I know ( not taking into account one unsubstantiated rumor ) Uncas is probably the last remaining SW34 floating and one that has, on his handrails, Henry Hinckley's signature. He was obviously proud of her when he built her.

Great story.

I am currently advising a client on the purchase of a very large, very old vessel. Cost of maintenance is certainly on our minds.

Uncas' price of purchase was NOTHING. A gimme. I had a very good idea what I was getting into.
My father (87 at the time and past Director of Mystic Seaport 1964-79 ) ) sent me an e-mail which read as follows.( paraphrased )
Dear Jamie, You're nuts! love Dad
So be it. If it were not a few like us out there in the world, there would not be a wooden boat magazine.

You don't have to tell me, I've spent a year and a half without sailing, but plenty of refastening, repairs. Cause I love my boat.

Pretty scary photo there Uncas. Good news about the rest of her though , and reading between the lines, you're happy about the boat builders that are doing the work this time.
Its only money as they say.
