View Full Version : I win! (gloat)
I've been fixing random topside leaks all this week, and we just had a major spell of rain last night. All night, the sounds of belting rain, water dumping out of my afican queen bimini perioditically, creaking dock lines and squeeking fenders kept me up.
Recently I:
-Rebedded 3 cabinside portlights
-Rebedded my port side grab rail
-Reinstalled the glass in my fore hatch (which looks darn good IMHO)
-Filled in holes left in my cabin top from hatch doghouse removal
This morning I woke up and felt all around the cabin and found no water or wet spots. I was particularly worried about the glass in the fore hatch, and it sits just above my sleeping face (and gives me an awesome view of my mast as I gaze up).
I was dry all night! Yesss!

" I was dry all night! Yesss!"
I am glad the boat is potty trained.

Every time I fix a leak, I find another one.
It is the nature of the beast... a wooden boat.
The only dry bunk is on shore.
So gloat while ya can. Just wait to the next rain storm. Oh, when that occurs, please post.
Photo evidence:
The wok you can see at the bottom is placed there when it rains to catch the water that drops from the portlight above it. It comes down behind the trim board and drops off the carlin under the hanging knee.
The wok was water-free this morning.

Chinese water torture.
WOK..WOK...WOK! ( a chinese chuckle )
There is something very true about dripping topside leaks being a form of torture...

I see from the banner that you might be here in Seattle. If so, that wasn't enough rain to count yet. That was barely enough to get the wood back to its normal Seattle moisture content. :D

I like the helmet...does that replace the wok or is it the wok?
With a second look, it is a WOK!

Yes, but it was enough rain that if it were to leak again (at least to the magnitude that it was before) it would have. But it didn't, and that kicks wok (helmet).
It's nickname is actually 'The Wok of Wonder' for its wonderful rain catching abilities.

To stop those creaking dock lines.
Had the same problem. What causes it is using scraps of braided lines for dock lines.
Get rid of those and get the 3 strand nylon. You won't hear a thing all night.
Also adding spring lines keeps the boat from moving back and forth in the slip all night.
The lines should droop just a little. Not be too tight.

I have a less sanguine view on this Bott, and it more or less reinforces Jamie's comment and Ron's caution. It's a wooden boat.
They move and work, and the chasing of leaks becomes an avocation. Not to say I'm not delighted you're warm and dry....for the moment:D

I'd say that this morning has been another decent rain, and we've had a few in the mean time...
Still dry! yes!
(getting ready in the morning for work/school, note the jacket for the morning head run:D)

Good job on finding the leak. Maybe you can hire yourself out to other folks as a Leak Detective.:)

Creaking dock lines? Change to 3 strand nylon instead of braided and
you will hear them NO MORE.
Squeeking fenders? Put a spring line on each side and and the boat won't sail back and forth in the slip all night, bring the fenders onboard
if they really don't need to be there.
CRITICAL MASS (critical mess) forget that. Just stay inside the bike lanes and the cars drivers won't get mad.Share the road. RIDE SINGLE FILE. Some people have to drive to work to carry tools and supplies and some people have health problems that prevent using a bicycle.
