Damn, that really stinks. He had just mentioned coming to FL. to wet a line.To look at the guy,you wouldn't think an illness could do someone like him in.First Robb White and then Ellis Rowe. All within such a relatively narrow realm.Condolences to his family and RIP.

Ellis's obituary from the Bangor Daily news:
ORLAND - Ellis Rowe, 59, master boat builder and proprietor of Rowe Boats of Orland, died Sunday morning, Sept. 10, 2006, surrounded by family at his home in Orland. Ellis was born and raised in Wilmington, N.C. He did a stint in the U.S. Navy as a sea bee diver, stationed in Panama. Ellis, a man of adventure, lived life on his own terms. He also resided in Virginia, Florida and the Bahamas, and spent a couple of years on a sailboat. He survived being capsized in a white squall between Florida and the Bahamas, and he loved to tell the tale. He graduated from Daytona Beach Community College with a degree in photography and studied boat building with renowned boat builder and designer, D.C. Bud McIntosh of Dover, N.H. While living an authentic "back to the land" lifestyle in Wells, during the late 70s and early 80s, he built The Piscataqua River Gundalow, a sailing barge, which is the only gundalow now in existence. He also built the yawl boat for the USS Constitution. For the past 15 years, Ellis had his own wooden boat shop in Orland. In recent years, he taught boat building and repair at the Wooden Boat School in Brooklin and San Francisco. In 2005, Ellis wrote a series of "how to" articles for Wooden Boat magazine on building the Simmons Sea Skiff. He is survived by his mother, Hazel Eakins of Wilmington, N.C.; his sister, Margaret "Sissy" Hull and his brother-in-law, Bill Hull, of Hampstead, N.C.; his son, Ben Rowe of Castle Hayne, N.C.; his daughter, Becky Rowe, recently of the U.S. Virgin Islands; his son, Brendan Rowe of Portland; his sweetheart, Marian Allen of Orland; his stepchildren, Jonas and Kelly Allen of Portland and Heather (Allen) Descollonges of Stanford, Calif.; his godson, Pascal Descollonges of Stanford, Calif.; his lifelong pal and fellow adventurer, Rick Owens of Deer Isle; and Ellis' border collie and shop manager, Jack. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to National Cancer Society, Border Collie Rescue or the Wooden Boat School. Arrangements by Mitchell-Tweedie Funeral Home and Cremation Service, 28 Elm St., Bucksport.

I found this on one of my threads....
Hello everyone. I'm a brand new member. I am not a woodworker, except for the fact that I am a professional classical guitarist. I hesitated to do this, but I wanted to let you guys know that Ellis Rowe has died. He was my uncle. I noticed that some of his posts were just weeks before his death. I'm pretty conservative politically and I disagreed with him on a number of things. However, obviously, the family is in shock. He was a terrrific uncle and a great guy...a master carpenter and boat builder. Not bad at photography either. The guy helped me out when I was growing up. As I was googling in order to find his obituary, I ran across this forum. Well, just wanted to let you know why you won't be hearing from him anymore. Take care.
Prayers for your family, Mikhail. So sorry to hear of your uncle's death.

Thanks Tar Devil. Hey, being in NC, with that name, do you pull for both UNC and Duke!? Shelby's a great little town. I too am from NC, but I'm up near Chicago now. Ellis had struggled with diabetes for the past few years, and unfortuantely, recently, an inoperable tumor appeared on his liver. Nothing the doctors could do. Very tragic situation. However, he lived well and did great work while he was here on the earth. Good man. Thanks again for the condolences.

Nah, not really. I bleed Tar Heel blue, though my son attends State. I do, however, have great respect for Duke's basketball achievements, so the name kinda reflects my admiration for both teams. The name will grace my boat when complete.
Shelby's a great little town.
Well, if you keep your head low. I actually live in Boiling Springs just outside Shelby, but my mailing address is Shelby.
Take care... great to have you posting!
Regards,
Phil

Tar Devil, my blood runs Carolina blue as well. I live right in the heart of Illini country so I had to keep my mouth shut at work the next day after the Heels beat Illinois for the national title.
