I am about to fasten the garboard plank on a chamberlain dory skiff. Attempts to seat head of copper "ringed" nail head leave the head proud of the plank.
Garboard is to be fastened on bottom board beveled so I have drilled appropriate hole level to the plane of the bottom board. Thus the head wants to stay proud. Attempts to pein the head do not leave a pretty finish.

Can you buck those nails? Additionaly, ring shank nails need a pre-drilled hole of the proper diameter. Fuller does make a flat bottom counter bore that is designed for sinking nail heads.

Are you sure the garboard wasn't intended to be cinch nailed? That was typical.
I had the same problem aamado. I knew I was going to paint the outside so if I had any nail head sticking up I bent it over with a nail punch (copper is soft) and filled the indentation with fairing compound. Another thing I ran into was driving the nail through the plank and the bottom so the end of the nail was sticking up through the bottom. Because the boat was planked upside down I couldn't see the problem. I tried pulling the nails out-- no good. So I cut off the nails on the inside with a grinder and filled the holes which were pretty small. The garboard is nerve racking because it's your first plank and it has some twist at the gains. Take it easy. For most of us this is a once in a lifetime experience.
