Hi All-

I'm looking to get into more "marine" type photography, and was wondering if anyone in the Seattle/Puget Sound area would be up for a photoshoot? I'm a local college sophomore and hobbiest photographer who would love to shoot some more wooden boats. The Port Townsend show got me hooked! If there is enough interest, I'd love to even put a calender together. I'm in no way a professional, and surely not soliciting myself for "work". Just looking to expand my hobby, and though this would be a good venue to gather some interest.

Some of my work is avalible to browse here:

(Click "Portfolio" and from there, the "Nautica" link).

Thanks!

Wonderful photography... Makes me want to drop everything and go right to working on my boat.

Mark, a good place to go spend some quality time shooting is starting at Fishermans Terminal and working your way down to the Ballard locks. TONS of great boats, and a good percentage of the salmon fleet are wood. HIGHLY reccomended.

If it were earlier in the season I would take you out sailing for some picture taking! Maybe in the spring as I am up to my eyeballs in projects. ;)

Just flipped through your site Mark, nice work! Definitely just get more time out there shooting. You will be fascinated by the rigging on the work boats and in that I would reccomend also lurking the boatyards. You will find a ton of interesting subjects (one yard in ballard has a vertical stack of 4 foot diameter tops probably 15 feet tall, crazy light distribution).

My wife is a photographer/web designer, has a similar eye:

Spokaloo- Thanks for the advice! I'm really interested in just getting out and shooting more. I think I'll have to take a walk down to Fishermans Terminal this weekend and poke around! Nice stuff on your wife's site as well, although I had some trouble navigating it on both firebox and safari on my Mac, you might want to let her know.

Thanks for the tips, I'll keep ya'all updated for sure :)

Ya see, the problem viewing it was the Mac! She was messing with CSS stuff on that site (web designer/ad designer by trade), which is a little tough to write when cross-browser testing. Ive told her a few times that Mac based stuff isnt viewing correctly, but its been nuts at the agency lately. Give it a whirl in Opera, and if not, IE7 is free and will go on your mac.

Also, you might consider shooting from a kayak/rowboat sometime. You would be amazed at what slow speed can show you to shoot.

Marc, I hope you find someone to do this with. Try this site. I participate in it and there are a lot of photographers there from the Puget Sound area who might want to join you. You will have to have an MSN password and join the group but it doesn't cost anything and it's a good group http://groups.msn.com/BECOMEAPROFESSIONALPHOTOGRAPHER

Thanks! Just a heads up, the site doesn't work with Opera+Mac either :( And Microsoft discontinued IE for Mac after 5 :( If I had a MacBookPro, then I could run Microsoft apps.

I would love to shooot from a kayak, a great idea!

Peter- Thanks for the link, I'll check it out :)

Have you been to the Center for Wooden Boats on the southern end of Lake Union (?) There are volunteers there who may be interested and knowledgeable about where to look... and may have a way to take you out on the water, too.

The terminal itself:

Sad old fellah that I hope got restored:

Fun with rigging!

As you can see, a great spot and if you look carefully a ton of wood. Nary a varnished board out there as they are all workboats, but they have a certain aire about them that makes the photo more timeless.

Hi Matt,

Lovely photos. You really have a talent.

There will be a few wooden boats at south Lake Union this weekend for the annual Norm Blanchard Wooden Boat Regatta. I will be there with "Kestrel", a Cheoy Lee Robb 35 yawl. You are welcome to photograph her. Her topsides were redone this summer but I am still working on the brightwork.:o You might want to bring one of those nice soft filters that make everything look young and healthy...

Nice to see you're still around, Tim, and that Kestrel is doing well.
