View Full Version : Three Fathom Sharpie
Hi,
I'm currently looking for a set of plans designed by Bill Schwicker known as the Three Fathom sharpie. There is an article about it in Wooden Boat magazine, issue 67. Its a double masted 18' sharpie with 5' of beam and is of plywood construction. Its actually a 36' chapelle sharpie scaled down and then resized for better proportions.
If you have ever read the Sharpie book by Reuel Parker, the picture on the cover is of the sharpie I'm looking for. If someone could tell me where I could contact Bill or where I could get a set of plans that would be great.
Thanks,
Ace
Sorry I can't help but I've read that article about five times. That boat looks just the way a small sharpie should look (IMHO of course).
I know exactly what you mean. With the cat-ketch rig and round transom it just looks great. I'm going to try calling WB and see if they have his contact information. They should sense he wrote the article, but you never know. If I can figure out how to use the scanner I have then I'll try to post some pictures of the article. If someone knows of anything really similar than just let me know. Thanks anyway though JimD.

I could be mistaken, but it sounds like Dale Austin bought the WB plans, rather than plans from Bill Schwicker.
Brian T Cunningham posted this 18er on another thread. Very similar. I bet you could put a round stern on her no problem.

I have searched and never come up with plans for the 3 Fathom Sharpie you mention. John Gardner's book "Building Classic Smallcraft" has a similar boat. I currently have the 20' version of that boat, and it is great.

Schwicker was fishing in FL back when the article came out. His 3-fathom sharpie is far closer to Munro's EGRET than the WB design, which as far too much draft.
Thanks for all your help guys. I'm still waiting to get word back from wooden boat, and I' still can't get my scanner/copier/fax to scan pictures for me. Does anyone know how fast one of these boats will go?
Thanks,
Ace
I Have recieved his contact info(courtesy of the wooden boat librarian) And I'll now be writing him a letter about his sharpie design . If I get the plans and his permission, I might post the rough sketches of it here on the forum. Thanks for all the help.
