SWMBO has an art show opening in November in NYC (Agora Gallery). Any recommendations for places to stay? This is in and around mid-town Manhattan.

I got into the mid-town Manhattan Sheraton last year for $120/night (using Expedia.com). Nice place, but coffee was $4.50 and toast was too expensive to eat :)

Don't eat breakfast there; Lindy's is right around the corner. Not sure how much cheaper the coffee is, but you don't eat at the hotel in NYC. Well, I don't, anyway!
By the way, if that's the Sheraton Towers you paid $120 a night for, good on ya! Hell of a deal. Nice location in the middle of everything, too. I stayed there right in midtown last year. It is where you want to be, I think.

Regarding "where to stay" it needs to be said, though it probably isn't news to you or anyone, that NYC hotels are painfully expensive, so don't expect anything overwhelming for your $200 per night. Another option you might consider is to rent a small apartment rather than a hotel. These can be surprisingly comfortable and satisfying, as well as affordable. Check here:

The Warwick at 54th and 6th Ave - midtown Manhattan. Just around the corner from MOMA and Radio City. Small hotel. Elegant - not horribly expensive for that area.

There are thousands of very cool B&B's in Manhattan. They don't have to be near the gallery, because they have fairly good mass transit in the city. Use Google, or a travel agent, and find a nice brownstone B&B.

Sheraton Starwood is in Chelsea near the Agora at about $350 a night, or if you want to play the starving artist and like a more bohemian atmosphere there is the Star Hotel at 30th and 8th about a 10 min walk from the Agora. I have stayed there a few times The Star hotel's website is http://www.starhotelny.com/index.php

So much depends on what level of comfort and suchlike you are looking for. I am quite happy staying in the youth hostels. Last time I was there I stayed in the big hostel up on Amsterdam St. near 104th st.:

Hostelling International New York, 891 Amsterdam Avenue, NY 10025-4403. Telephone: 212-932-2300

I think it cost me about $30/night. However, you get what you pay for. I was in a shared bunkroom and the bathroom was down the hall. It was also a bit noisy.

My cousins sometimes stay at the Milburn Hotel, which is a "normal" hotel and thus much more comfortable than a hostel. Milburn: 242 West 76th St, New York, NY 10023 (Between West End & Broadway) - (212) 362-1006 or 800-833-9622. Their on-line reservation system does not seem to be working (they are saying they are booked up for Sept. 2007, which I don't believe), so I can't check the rates, but as I recall it was reasonable by New York standards and the rooms were smallish (typical New York) but quite nice and comfortable.

My first trip to NYC I drove into Queens (well, Ozone Park) from Staten Island, arriving at 0100 in a rainstorm. Found the Haven Motel, requested a room for the night. "What -- all night?" was the reply. Busy night it was too.

At the SoHo Grand they ask you if you'd like a goldfish in your room, or did when I was last there (I wasn't paying!). Told them I wouldn't likely get peckish in the night.

But neither of these are mid-town, sorry to digress.

My wife shopped it online and we stayed at the Waldorf Astoria for about 200.00. Nice place. Nothing over the top in the room, but great view!!

"Well, lets see some of the art!"

Ok then. Lots of them are based on canoe trips on Georgian Bay and Killarney. For more, see www.janwheeler.com (http://www.janwheeler.com)

I can't suggest anyplace to stay as well, I rarely go to NYC.
I must say, I am amazed at the prices.
I suppose that any major city is about the same.
Then again, stayed at a Youth Hostel in London for 12 pounds.
Just as clean as some motels I have stayed at. And the hostels do leave a light on.

This is in and around mid-town Manhattan.I can recommend the Hudson Hotel (http://www.hudsonhotel.com/). It's very chic. The rooms are very tiny (but amazingly well laid out, rather like a boat). The Hudson was designed by the architect Philippe Starck. He did a great job.

The best thing about it is that it's about a block off Columbus Circle -- arguably the best subway connections in the city. The other Ian Schrage/Morgan's group hotels -- the Morgan (http://www.morganshotel.com/)and the Royalton (http://www.royaltonhotel.com/) -- are good too. Cheap, though, is not what they are, although you can sometimes find good deals.

Best of all...I believe Paris Hilton has been 86'd from Ian Schrage/Morgan hotels on Ian Schrager's orders...something about her not being "our sort of people". :D

Is she anybody's? Anyway, last I heard, Paris was into plastic boats, plastic surgery, plastic everything. Not likely to be found in wooden boat circles.
Speaking of circles, Columbus' is a great mid-town location. One problem in making recommendations here has been the lack of budget information. If you have the budget, the rest all falls in line. Isn't that always the case, though?
