The Maritime Museum at Darling Harbour, for one. Sydneysiders (I'm not one) will be able to tell you more.

A ferry trip across the harbour is very pleasant.

I was shipped over to Sydney recently for the boat show.... took one day in Sydney and went to see the Maritime Museum... recomend that you get the big ticket that entitles you to museum but also u get to walk around (names escape me) there frigate and go through the submarine also a tour round the replicar Endevor and as a bonus the James craig... you can see through some of her hull plates..... if you sweet talk the ppl there you might get invited to there ship yard where they got a big rebuild going on pretty cool stuff.

What chris said or:

Get a map:

Sydney Maritime Museum - go outside and see the new zealand racing yacht 'Akarana'.

then walk 10mins:

Sydney fish market - eat! eat! eat! (oysters)

take a taxie 10mins approx aus$10 -15 dollars:

CYCA (Crusing Yacht Club of Australia in Elizabeth Bay - every taxi will know where it ist) out-door bar (you have to sign in and tell them that you are a yachtie from Oveseas - sit out on the deck and look at the yachts - go on a Wednesday night or Fridaynight and you could be asked to crew for the 'round the can races'. Eat chips, drink beer and have a yack to the crews.

rent a yacht:

Next to the CyCA is the biggest yacht-rental company in Sydney Harbour - rent a 32'footer and go for a fang on the harbour - or the 40footer or the 50foorter.... you can hire a skipper if you want to drink - hell, just ask at the CYCA bar... for around aus$200 you can stay overnight on the boat. It is not expensive and they are good, new clean boats. I found them helpful and friendly.

Ride the local ferry:

from Circular Key out to Manley. Take the slow ferry out to Manley (approx 1 hour). for $10? see the Sydney
Heads - the open ocean. Walk around manley and go for a swim, eat. Take the fast-ferry back if you want.

Eat:

The Royal Sydney Yacht Squadron has a resturant - you will have to phone and ask (i dont remember if you can). Tell them where you are from. The photos and memorabilia on the walls is worth the visit. They also have races - you may be able to crew. Do you like j24's? About $15 by taxi i think.

Many skiff racing clubs.

Read the free newspaper 'Sydney Afloat' to find out what is happening locally:

I have a very good friend in the Sydney area, and a sailor too, of course. Entertainment of the highest order. PM me if you want contact info.

If you get to the Drummoyne Rowing Club, tell them I sent you. (It was, of course, a long time ago, no doubt they have probably forgotten me by now ;) )

I am not a beach person, but if you've never been, take at least a few minutes to check the beaches north and south of Sydney. They are interesting on many fronts, but they are geologically quite distinctive and interesting in their own right.

Of course it goes without saying that you ought to stop by Auckland on the way...

Hi Tom,
If you havent commited yourself through Chris or Ed you may like to join us in a Sydney Amateur Sailing Club traditional division race on Saturday the 7th. The division is a mixture of blasts from the past including a some very competitive boats that hoist a spar. The stage is the harbour, bridge, and opera house with a supporting cast of ferries, deeply burdened car-carriers, tupperware galore, 18 footers modern & vintage, and the inevitable hordes of marauding etchells & lasers.
We set off about 10am, come down the harbour to the SASC for lunch and join battle with about 70 other vessel from the club + about another 3-400 yachts on starboard tack from other clubs for the next 2 - 4 hours finishing up back at the mooring at about 6 pm. If you have no precommitments your chariot would be Anonyma II a 36' sloop circa 1950.
From the left side may I suggest a trip on an accompaning ferry following the 18's on Sunday afternoon that leaves the sponsoring clubs, the Sydney Flying Squadron, Kirribilli or 18 Foot Sailing Club, Double Bay at about 2pm. If you are still in town on Tuesday 10th the Wooden Boat Association of NSW has its monthly meeting at the Gladesville Bowling Club. Dinner at 6 and meeting at 7.30pm with a guest speaker. Last months guest was Ian Keirnan the clean-up the world sailor. At this late stage the guest is unknown but you will find it turns out right on the night! If you are into restorations there are 2 serious projects under way are nearing completion at local yards. " Windward II" a 48 foot a gaff rigged centreboard ketch and "Maluka"a 40 foot gaff cutter that will be a serious Sydney-Hobart contender this year. Both these projects are fairly easy to access at interesting harbouside sites.
